Hi guys,

I'm just trying to find out what people with the latest model Jimny's have been doing to get dual batteries into them, seeing as the ABS system takes up all the space where most people mounted the 2nd battery previously.

I've seen a bracket that moves the water bottle and some aircon piping, but im not too keen on the idea of moving aircon piping. Another that mounted it over the headers, which imo is asking for trouble..

What else have people done?

Wouldn't you then need to have a sealed battery, which is extra $$? And there's not exactly much space in the cabin for a battery/battery box, if you use the back seats.

my deep cycle battery boiled. no battery likes heat IMO. a D51T1 optima fits in the standard battery slot and is 41 AH. pair it with a red-arc (or any good solenoid), some thick wireing and some deep cycle AGM batteries strapped down under the passenger/ driver seat and your laughing.

I've got a portable waeco coolpower 36 hooked up on a waeco raps unit
simple plug and play and you can take it out when not needed.
the raps is sitting under my seat always ready to plug in the battery, fridge and what have you...

You should have a look into Gel batteries, they are generally fully sealed and will not vent, same as others, best position to mount is in the back of car...

There is no such thing as a fully sealed wet cell battery.

They will all vent when overcharged. A faulty alternator can cause this.

If you do put a battery in the boot fuse the +ve supply to it at BOTH ends. If you keep the battery in the engine bay this is not strictly necessary with a neat installation.

Gel cell batteries are fully sealed, unless you overheat/ overcharge them, and they explode
AGM such as the optima spiral cells can be installed on their sides, even upside down.

Jezza, go search and read a data sheet for an Optima battery. Optima specifically advises their batteries should not be mounted upside down as then they will not vent as the are designed to do rather than explode.

I stand by my comments.

The Optima fits a wide variety of cars, trucks and other applications such as wheelchairs, UPS systems and compactors. In addition, it can be mounted in any position, even upside down

they appear to stand by their statement too as long as you dont pump too many volts and/or amps when charging.

Don't get confused by advert-speak. An optima can be inverted, but it can't be used whilst inverted. The instructions for mounting positions come with the battery. I've run optima batteries for something like 17 years and I've just bought my 4th. The rules for mounting haven't changed as far as I know.

They absolutely do vent. They absolutely do not leak liquid.

hydrogen cycles within the battery. the valves will only operate if you boil the thing.

yeh sure some people wont like to take the risk that if their voltage regulator on their alternator dies their battery could start venting hydrogen into the car. there's ways around that, like DC/DC charges too which give you an additional protection.

under those circumstances i agree, if something breaks, your right, it can vent.
under normal operating conditions, the battery wont vent. it will if the internal pressure hits the magic number but from what i understand thats closer to 40 psi.

Here's a little optima experiment. Wet the vents with some water and put it on charge.

You might be surprised to see some little bubbles. They vent.

Hi guys,

I have just had a projecta 150A isolator kit turn up but i bought the CTEK 250s dual aswell as I decided I wanted the solar input and smart charging instead of the simple isolator. The one question i have after reading a few sites is whether the ctek will keep drawing power if the main battery is dropping its charge? I guess my concern is whether or not the ctek will cut off if it senses the input voltage is dropping? I wasnt intending to use both the isolator and the ctek but do i need to?

From what I can see you still need to use the isolator. If not then the CTEK will continue to draw current from your main battery to charge the secondary battery even when the car is not running. At least that is the way I see it based on the little info provided on the CTEK site.

Jake

I think all the AGMs have a small vent somewhere (just a pin hole on the small ones) but they are not likely to give off much gas, so I would not be too concerned about having one in the cab. Mine has been there for a year now.

Jake, How do you charge your battery?

Im thinking about sticking one of these slimline batteries under the passenger seat, but undecided how to charge it yet. I was thinking about using The thumper charging kit from Home of 12V, but I need to do some more research on thins overcharging the battery.

Might make a couple of mock ups out of cardboard and see what fits best and where it can go. Maybe one of the rear footwells or on the shelf near the rear side window.

Jezza, what size batteries do you run under the seat?

I don't, because i don't have to. not havign ABS i have space for a duel battery, but if i didn't, i would probably run one of these.

224 mm tall with connectors pluged in and only 175mm wide it would fit in a rear wheel arch ifyour willing to remove some plastic and make a decent mounting point for it.

My cars nearly brand new, only done 13,000km so far, so I really want to stay away from hacking into any plastics and i'd like to make any additions easily reversible.

I ended up getting the waeco RAPS 12R-U2 wiring kit with the double socket outlets.
But still deciding what to do for a battery to run the fridge.
Would you guys recommend upgrading the original crank battery to an optima D51 first? or do you think i'd be better off getting the 55ah battery (I like the slimline shape) I posted above?
Keeping in mind that they are both roughly the same price and my stocko crank battery is still pretty new.

I have fitted a dual battery system in our 2013 Jimny. Two cranking batteries in paralell for the winch with breakers. I have made up a 700 amp jumper for if I need to use the winch to stop the breakers throwing.
one 45ahr deep cycle in the back for our fridge. This is controlled by a redarc VSR.
The mounting of the second cranking battery was a breeze once I was shown how to make room. Thanks to Jake jtayl153 from Big Jimny Forum for this. Happy to share my notes.
