done a bit more work on the canopy today. trimmed it to size, made clamp points, and put the lid on. ive still got a bit to do like: marine carpet the inside of it fiberglass over the plywodd clamp points to make them a bit stronger fiberglass over the hinges so no one can try unscrew them from the outside install the lock repaint it make a storage compartment for the jack, wheel wrench and other tools in the back im also going to put a stainless bar set up on it similar to this one....

A nice metallic gun metal grey. Compliment the lower body color of the vit.

I finally got some time to finish my canopy off. Heres some pics... Roof from inside. I marine carpeted it. Also going to add a led interior light to it Front of roof from outside. Fitted and sealed nicely... Inside the back. Have a bit of room for storage. Going to add some led lamps on pressure switches here for when im looking for stuff of a night.. Inside view of lock. Its a three point locking system. With a large "tongue" locking the lid in the centre and the two rods locking it on either side Outside view of lock. Folding t handle style with key lock. Inside view of the divider panel. Made from 20mm nida (we use it at work in igloo wall panels. It acts like insulation so will keep the heat in and sound out) with 2 layers of fiberglass over top and blue marine carpet. The hole is where my 8 inch sub will soon be. Its 99% finished at this point but it is now mounted on the car and can stay on whilst driven Things i still have to do: Mount the subwoofer in the panel and make a sub enslosure Make a sports bar style stainless bar to mount spotties/lightbar on. Give it all a good buff and polish Cheers!

looks really good, but the rear window looks a little odd. in my opinion it needs to follow the shape of the roof line more.

i always thought a fiberglass roof styled like a 'tin top' with small windows etc would be awesome for a sierra soft top. After seeing you efforts Tassie i might have to give it a try!

Thanks mate, i didnt even realise the shape of the window not following the roof. Could be something to change if i ever had to make another one. Thanks. Takes a bit of work but i think its well worth it. I ended up spending $360 on materials which is alot cheaper than the $1100 or so for the rallytops from the states and i made it to suit my needs and i know it fits properly

Did you us conventional matting or something else?

Santos wrote: How much of that is just the resin/catalyst? Did you us conventional matting or something else? I used approximately 15kg general purpose resin @ $5 a kilo 500ml of catalyst @ $10 a litre For mat i used chop strand mat in 450gsm and 225gsm. (Gsm stands for grams per square metre) Mat is approximately $7 kg from memory. I used about 20kg all together. I also used some biaxial and triaxial mat which is just used for extra strength. Cant remember the exact price though. I used about 4 metres of that. I buy my materials from work which means i get a staff discount though. I spent more on clamps, rubber seals, led lights (yet to be installed), the steel for the sports bar which i will be installing soon, lock and the paint more than the actual fiberglassing materials.

$5 a kilo resin.. wish i knew where in sydney i could get that. sounds crazy but most of the dd jobs of fiberglassing of late i use cotton rags and denim for the bulk. 10 layers is ridicolously strong, but i clamp it, not sure if that would work as for something like a hardtop.

The main problem i found was keeping the canopy light enough to easily lift off but strong enough so that it wouldnt flex to much. Mine is about 5 mm thick. Not sure of weight but i can easily handle it
