I'm finding that my jimny is being sluggish.
At cold start blows a cloud of smoke a quater the size of the car its self,
With the the 75% chance it's a petrol smell!!!
When I change gears for 1st to 2nd it is sluggish until it hits 3500-4000rpm
The car golts forward because the cars acceleration bolts to 6000rpm
In a second!!!

The jimny is a 1.3L efi NON Turbo, 1998

Anyone got any ideas please do tell it's starting to drive me crazy.

does it use oil?
how bad is the fuel economy? what tyres are you running.

Its a manual, it uses next to no oil, im getting 200 -250km per tank
and im running 225/70R15C Radial A/T

i get that kind of fuel economy on 30x9.5s if i only put 20psi in them. at the moment with 30psi ive just gone past half a tank (indicated) and done 215km (corrected for wheels)
i found stock gearing and larger tires increased fuel usage, and using a 27% reduction transfer case and increasing my revs on the highway has brought my fuel economy back to stock even though my car is a lot taller, and with more rubber on the road. i doubt the new exhaust/headers are making any additional economy.

Have you ever cleaned your injectors?

Fuel filter clean?

Could be many things

I had an issue similar in an old car I had. Some injectors where stuck open and some closed. Wouldn't rev properly until 3k plus

Calculate the L/100km of fuel usage.

(Fill it to the brim, hit the trip meter, drive around untill you would normally fill up, fill it up again to the brim, note the Litres put in, and note the KM done. Do calculations)

Everyone has a different idea of what a tank of fuel is.

I had this problem with mine and it was a bent lower pulley on for the timing belt I purchased a new one from lowrangeoffroad ,made a heap of

Do a compression test, if its low on all cylinders then check the keyway for the crankshaft pulley.

i would start with checking the air filter. ive had some power/ fuel economy issues with mine, but only because the bauxite dust up here forms clay and blocks filtration.
if thats fine check the plug gap and look for cracks in the plug insulation. also take note of what colour the plugs are.

that can tell you some of whats going on in your engine (over fuelling, too lean) and the plug gap could also be part of the problem.
after that, put a bottle of injector cleaner through with some 10% ethanol fuel (95RON with 10%ethanol if its available)
if that makes any changes at all it could be the problem.

if its not, then id probably pull the catalytic converter off next to see if its collapsed/ blocked with junk.

Can I get a 1.3 EFI Jimny with a turbo

I vote you have a sticky injector or stuffed fuel pressure regulator. Clouds of rich fuel in the exhaust on startup, sluggish/boggy performance at low revs, and terrible fuel economy (from the looks of it) would seem to indicate really high fuel pressure or an injector problem that's flooding the car.

Pull the plugs and read them -



If they read rich, then you have a clue. Alternatively, get the car to somewhere with a lambda meter (sideband air fuel) and get them to stuff it up the exhaust. I reckon it's going to show uber-rich.

Check the fuel pressure at the rail. If it's not to spec, check the regulator or the return line for kinks, blocking etc. a blocked return line will make the car run crazy rich even if the regulator is fine.

Get the injectors cleaned. Your car is 16 years old - that's a lot of scope for injector failure.

That stuff would 100% create the faults you are seeing all by themselves.

If none of that stuff works/is the problem, then it could be a collection of things that are all contributing - timing (keyway damage etc)+ blocked cat etc, but I'd want to rule out the fuel system first. It's what it feels like to me.

im geting 11.1l/100 with the tyres at 30psi but that was also with a few hours of offroad work so i think id be nearer to 10l/100
