As I have said before I'm a chemist and I can't weld. So about the same time as Monley started in Gove I came up with the idea of building a camper trailer instead of buying one. Then I got him drunk and took advantage of him and we came up with a design which you see here.
it has the white fibreglass pod you might have seen on the roof of my zook and the enclosed section will be tall enough to hold a 80L Engel.

As you can clearly see it has:
HD10X2F100P Hub Drum 10"x2.25" F100 Parrell Bearings (196.00)
EBP10L 10" Elec Backing Plate Assy Left Hand (74.17)
EBP10R 10" Elec Backing Plate Assy Right Hand (74.17)
90195 Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller (205.00)
BCWK20 Brake Controller Wire Kit (20 amp) (40.00)
polly block trailer hitch thing. 15kg of welding rods
Ball is supplying: springs, u bolts, shackles, pads and weld on hangers and a custom 57 inch tip to tip axle to suit parallel bearings and a jimny wheel track (jimny and trailer on 15x7 -15 speedy desert rats with 30X9.5 kms'2)
5 8m lengths of 50x50x3mm and 1 8m 75x50x3. 7 sheets of composite plastic and aluminium for the box.
1 tone sliders for a mega draw.

axles and springs are sitting at Balls place in Katherine, hubs breaks controllers and whatnot are somewhere between Melbourne and Darwin and other electricals are on their way from evalbay.
all up i think it will be lucky to tare at under 270kg.

Overall the box will be 2400 long and 1700 wide. Current plans are to put a long draw up the middle with a fridge, bbq and food prep space with space for plastic tubs underneath.. car end will just have a door that drops down onto the drawbar so I can get to the space up front where 1spare tyre will go, a few gerri cans, chainsaw and firewood.

i reckon once its has all i want to have in it it will be near on 500kg. the aim is to have this ready for Katherine so i can buy a fridge while there and drop it straight in the trailer. already have 200AH of deep cycle for the trailer and a 50 ah under the bonnet of the car.

for now, a 1.3 with stock gearing and 30"s :oops:
i made my car too tall, so now i need something to carry my pod, and i have a puppy now so i need space in the back of the suzuki for her.
that's why im building a trailer.
as for the dimensions, the pod dictated the size, and i really wanted the engel for future trips and camping, so that dictated the height, and the Central Arnhem highway dictated the materials, making for a heavy ass trailer
so now i also want a 1.8 so i can actually tow the thing. its a hobby!

I don't want to hate but you'll be working hard to tow it. Is 500kg the fully laden weight?

yeh its just a estimate. depends how much junk i cram into it. it might only end up being 400kg i really wont know till i get a tare weight

Zukenutter is right. My trailer rolled in at 360kg dry when put over the weigh bridge for rego, it now has a rooftop tent, tailgate kitchen, 2.5mtr long pullout awning and a solar panel and weighes 502kg without food. My 2007 Jimny pulls it but is working hard. I wouldn't like to pull it over a long distance.

Bobsan, are you still running standard tyres? How do you find hill starts with over 500kg (I'm guessing more like 650kg or more laden) behind you?
I've towed close to 900kg a few times and it's a real effort. I use 2 low for steep hill starts to save my clutch.

I have never towed with a jimny so I have no idea exactly how bad it will go. Ill only be sitting on 60-70 kph for long trips out. I would like to think with a 1.8L towing at 100 kph would be achievable which I suspect it will be from what I have heard from WA regarding 170-180kph and still pulling.
I'll work something out. What that may be will depend on how bad the trailer is to tow and how long it takes me to find a good 1.8.
Idealy id like a reconditioned one

Just a short reply ;)

I'd fix gears and not worry so much about the 1.8, but that's just me sounding like a broken record.
Once you're in motion a 1.8 will probably be good on the open road, the problem is getting moving and then dealing with hills. With 600kg+ you'll need to slip the clutch a fair bit, 1.8 won't fix that, and you'll probably find yourself down to 3rd of even 2nd on long hill climbs during h'way driving. Also the load + 1.8 torque will be putting a lot of strain through the driveline.

A Jimny can tow reasonably well but you still need to be realistic, and you'll need to have a bit of mechanical sympathy.

Zukenutter Hills don't worry me as there isn't any around here, I live on the wimmera plains and what we call a hill around here may be 30ft high. The better half and I spend a lot of time camping in a state forest close to home. My jimny is running std tyres, I purchased a full set of 15x7 sunrayias and std tyres to be used on the trailer or the Jimny if required. The weight of my camper 502Kg including 53 Liters of water, we carry nothing that is not essential to keep the weight down. I also have a offroad soft floor camper which is heavy I don't think the Jimny would pull it, the GV pulls it ok though.

i hate to be the one to say this with tanking off and stuff.
but since i went to 1.6 in genki the gearing Feels so much better, because your moving your power band a lot lower it feels so much better.
i used to think my gearing was putrid now its quite ok. in the bush the car is so much better to drive! i also change gears around 1500rpm lower and it just pulls...
i also towed richy round the block with the jimny (i live on a Bloody steep hill) and it pulled it along well. thats Much more than the 500kg you guys are talking about! stoping at speed would be quite frighting tho i would think haha
as much as i usualy jump on the gearing bandwagon a bigger motor is pretty good in a jimny!

Interesting feedback. I'd be interested to know how much effort a decent hill start would take, maybe hills around mine are just the problem... maybe I should move ;)

haha yeh this is why im putting breaks and a premium controller in. it will keep the seat clean and the cabin smelling fresher.
