Hi again guys

Im having trouble withmy carby im pretty sure when i turn the car on have to hold the ignition in and give it the berries before it finally kicks over.. Then i have to sit there revving it to get it warm, and then when i take off i can be pushing in the exelerator and the cars only movings slowly, not even reving at all.. But after about a 30 second drive it rs like mormal(this only happens when the car started for the first time in the morning.), hower i have had it now stalls when coming to a stop some times.. This only started happening just after replacing my clutch though.. What do you guys think is the problem? If the carby is buggerred is it better to get rebuilt or get a new one?

Hi mate,

It sounds like you have an auto-choke issue. I had the same problem on start up. Then check your mixtures on the carb. I would keep the same carby and rebuild it.
I had mine tweeked by a Carby specialist. He fixed my auto-choke and tuned the carby for $90 dollars.

I also had this problem. Had the choke cable tied to off for a while as a quick fix. Finally got around to pulling the carby off and having a play with it the other week. Turns out the heater hose that leads to the auto choke control sensor was clogged with some grease looking gunk. nice quick easy job to do, once that was fixed i gave it a bit of a tune and it runs sweet now. Idle back to 1000rpm and gone from around 300k to a tank to just over 400k to a tank. stoked!

Ahh yeah sweet as thank guys... Im gonna buy a service kit and see if i can fix it up... Otherwise im gonna do a webber carby conversion. I spoke to a specialist in perth about them cutting out when going up a steep dune or hill, he reckons that all carbies will do that, and that only gas or diesel injected will never cut out when going up a steep hill, I was wondering if thats true? So far i havent heard any one say this about the normal 1.3L carby?

1.3 carbs will stumble if bounced on a steep climb, and die on big angles. Apparently there are some weber fixes that prevent this happening with weber carbs to some extent, but I have no experience with them, I'm skeptical though, carbs are ultimately gravity controlled and angle defendant to some extent.

I can assure you that normal EFI petrol motors will run on any angle and never stumble or die, it's not just a characteristic of BBQ fuel or diesel.

Hahahah I was looking into this a while ago wondering what sort of check/ball valve arrangements you could use to make it work...

I tried thinking along those lines too but the only way it looked a goer was if it fed a swirl tank and then if the pump could work if full of air... then I sobered up.
