Hey Guys
I thought id ask the experts im Trying to decide on what to get for my cape trip in july a jimny or a 3dr Grand vitara 1.6L i have budgeted around 10 ish thousand big ones maybe a tad more if it was setup with a bit of lift and tyres.
the only issue is i want to tow my little alloy camper trailer up there which im guessing weighs around 300kg loaded. ill be driving solo so dont need a heap of space in the car and im going up with a few friends in there older vitaras who want to hit up a few of the harder tracks. i already have my little 1990 jlx vitara which has done me great service over the years and seen me through some extreme terain but unfortunatly the old motor is on her last legs and i dont think she would be up for the trip.

G16B into the 1990 vitara?

I wouldn't take any of those cars up the cape myself, but I can't see the point shelling out for a car that's mechanically almost identical to the car you already own and then flogging up up to the cape and back.

A club trip did the cape quite a few years ago with sierras. They were lightly laden, but the corrugations killed the back axle housings, as in broke both of them.

IMHO it's a trip to hire a landcruiser for. Just my 2c.

i had thought of transplanting a new motor into the old vitara but seeing as it still has the original gearbox, transfercase im wondering how long before im up to replace those aswell, there are also a few other little issues starting to arise in the old girl. but still could be an option.

I had also thought of hiring or buying a bigger 4wd but i dont think id here the end of it with my mates driving there vitaras.

i was originaly leaning toward the jimny just as far as fuel economy was concerned and they seem a little bit easier to mod up is this true?

I have the day off tomorrow and seeing as the general consensus is go for the GV im going to go out and test drive a few

Did it in my Jim last year, Kicked ass. No mechanical issues apart from a split o-ring on the fuel pump which made me loose fuel pressure. (didnt figure that out till i got home...) and my aux battery tray got ripped out of its mount. But that was just design issues on my part, that wont happen again

Corrugations are pretty hardcore, but they come and go, and youll have a really bad section for a few kms, then itll be really nice for like an hour or so, then bad again....

Its all about picking your speed though, I found with the Jim if i took them at around 80-90 i was sweet, but if i was already going too slow for them when i hit them... Forget about speeding up... The car just cant get there whilst shaking around.


It wasnt the most comfortable trip in the world, but I'm telling ya, you feel like an absolute hero once it sinks in that youve done a pretty epic trip in what is really a fairly rickety and basic fourby, compared to the luxury (in comparison) fourbys I saw up there. I have no power steering or anything either so you feel quite man-ish by the end of it.

That reminds me, i really gotta finish my video of that trip and get it on Youtubes.

buy the car that u like more and u enjoy driving more, even after the trip or not... one u get the one that u think is the prettiest just find a way to make it capable enough and enjoy the trip to make it drive there and back

i own a jimny,i voted the vit. we did cape york last year. ( not in the jimny )

the road on the way up would not be fun in a jimny go soemthing with a longer wheel base.

2000 lwb GV. I picked mine up for $5500 with 6 months rego. That leaves you $4500 to mod it. $800 for a jml winchbar, 1000ish for a winch, $800ish for suspension and $1400ish for tyres leaving you $500 to spend on beer I'd go the LWB GV cause it got a shitload of room comfy for the long highway driving thats gettting to the cape and back and with all the room you can get away without needing anything on the roof.

hey guys test drove a few diffrent grand vitaras yesterday lwb an swb and they where definatly a bit more comfortable then the jimny to drive as you guys have all said i also test drove a couple of jimnys and found them to be a little tight just in the drivers seat but they felt more like an offroad beast but at the end i wasnt 100% sold on them it could just be the ones i drove. but for some reason i found i like my current vitara better might just be cause im used to it. so im now thinking of doing what steve said and rebuild the old girl pretty much from the ground up. going to be a crazy few months of mechanical work haha hopefully it will leave me a bit of extra coin for all the extras lockers, winches etc.

The New Question Now i Guess is it worth me rebuilding my G16A or trying to find a G16B and then should i rebuild the G16B ?
