Nope: from Wiki (it was actually the listed example of how the codes work)

Quote:
For Example
4A-GE
4 – 4th generation engine in the A engine family
A – The Engine Family it is in
G – Wide-angle dual camshaft
E – Electronically Fuel Injected

I wouldn't bother:

Quote:
4A, 4A-C, 4A-L, 4A-LC

The basic 4A was a SOHC inline four (I4) 8-valve carburettor-equipped engine which produces 78-90 hp (58-67 kW) at 4800 rpm, torque: 85 lb·ft (115 N·m) at 2800 rpm. The power and torque output figures vary between different regions of the world.
North American market engines:
4A-C 1.6 L I4, 8-valve SOHC, 90 hp (67 kW) at 4800 rpm
European market engines:
4A-L 1.6 L, I4, 8-valve SOHC, 84 hp (63 kW) at 5600 rpm, and torque 96 lb·ft (130 N·m) at 3600 rpm (compression at 9.3:1)[9]
Australian market engines:
4A-C 1.6 L, I4, 8-valve SOHC, 78 hp (58 kW) at 4800 rpm

So it's really just (roughly) equivalent to a G16A. (In australian spec)

The real issue that scuttles it for me though is the gearbox. There's no desirable gearbox to use behind a 4A-C. You can put up with the annoying gearbox options if you have power to make the pain of back to back unis, crappy three speed autos and hydraulic clutches go away, but to have all those hassles and then have 58Kw just doesn't seem to make sense.

Just my 2C.

I know I bang on about this stuff incessantly :deadhorse: but it's not hard to find a 70-100Kw 4 cylinder motor, possibly even for free. The BIG hassle is the gearbox.

The 4age and 4ac share the same block. The toyota t50 gbox bolts to both of them. The 4ac is a great motor for how much you can get them for.

You can buy them brand new from a place in NZ for $1,200

The W box needs some mod's to fit.

There was many generations of the 4a block and a few variants. They are NOT all the same just to clear up another post above.

T50's are getting thin, partly from everyone converting k-sev's or sprinters. And they also need to be gently caressed or they pop..

Steve, have you looked into suitable gearboxes and worked backward from there?

I would say the aftermarket bell housing new in NZ would be $750 NZD tops, the 4age and 4/7afe i think are 2 really cool series of engines in my small world but the gearbox is the killer.

On the plus side you could possibly do away with the divorced transfer setup and run hilux transmission, its a slippery slope though

I should clarify, in terms of bolting a t50 gbox to a 4a series motor all block. s are the same in this respect. as far as im aware the only differences between the 4age blocks through all series is the 3 rib and later model 7 rib style. And also some had oil squirters on the pistons and others don't. But you can add oil squirters to a non oil squirter block (tap a hole in the oil galery). The outside physical dimensions of all blocks are all the same as far as I'm aware.

Note. Crank shaft bearing size changed too.

if you can find a cheap housing and t50 by all means its a viable conv, 7afe produces gd torque and reas revs from an 1800,but they are tall etc, anyone got any info on a GV G16 by any chance
