hi all posted couple days ago about a dead vit 5spd to use as a dummy box for a engine conversion, had another idea, if i just used the gearbox that comes with that engine and used a sierra transfer as they are separate would this path be easier and work?

It's all about where you're mounting everything, the front to back measurements are different and if you change to a sierra transfer they are an offset output and afaik the vitara output is in the centre.

Post with which engine you're planning to put in which car with which gearbox and you will get a LOT more help, I'd go looking for your old thread but it will be much easier for you to find and either update with this new information and question, or transferring the information to this thread.

Also the search function may be able to net you the information you need if it has already been tried before, or you are just chasing measurements there's a good chance it's on here!

That's a better idea than the first one, and much easier, however, you'll need to consider a few things. Sierra transfer cases are quite strong, but a CA18DET and the weight of a vitara might stretch the friendship. Also, Sierra transfers all have reduction in high range, from 1.409 to 1.7, depending on gearing. That's really going to screw with your road RPM.

I would suggest using a nissan manual (or even better, a nissan auto) and a Navara or patrol transfer case.

Steve.
PS you haven't told us much about the intended use of the car so it's hard to give more specific advice about gearing and strength. Also, I'm sure you're aware the CA won't meet 1994 emissions, so you're going to have a bit of a engineering wrangle to get it legally on the road.

If you plan on running larger tyres than the high range reduction in the Sierra case will help with road revs. You will have to try get the best rear output alignment you can though as they are not a centred output.

That's the key. I have no idea what the OP's use or tyre size is so it's all speculation. It would be a shame to fit a motor with heaps more mid range torque than a G16 and then have it spinning at 4500rpm on the highway though.

cheers for the input guys, i hear what you are saying about the navara/patrol case gwangen and id already thought about it but it also boils down to budget and other factors, i really didnt think the vit box would be able to deal with it but just wanted to put it out there, there seems to be some clued up cats on this site and i value good straight to the point honest opinions. bottom line is that there is a complete CA18DET ready to use at my disposal with loom, computer, everything really ready to go in, want to keep it 4x4 though and I love Vits, just a pity that 16bs have no grunt and will shatter if turbed without spending a bomb on one. Back to the drawing board i spose!
p.s sorry tyres at mo are 235/75/15 but may go to 30's or at a stretch 31's, main use is dune thrashing ie trying to hit the same hills as on my moto, regular 4b drivin not extreme rock smashin river crossin shit!
