Jimney started whinning. Slowly getting louder. Also a rattle become noticable in forth and to a lesser extent in fifth gears at lower rpms. Whining noise is noticable at higher speeds, 50kph+. No loss of performance.rattle noise dissapears when off throttle. Whining noise constant at higher speeds, doesn't go away in neutral when coasting or change tone. So I suspect its not engine, probably drivetrain.

Thanks. I'll probably take it to someone, just want to have a basic ideas of what it might be so I don't get a bum steer.

Just grab the shaft and try to wiggle the UNI joints. If there is more then .5mm of movement, repack or replace.
Also, knock your tcase into neutral and try then, it won't load it up, but it could help...

At least it lasted 10,000km longer then the rear driveshaft. . its not just a whine anymore. In two weeks its gone from a whine to a full "I'm preparing to explode" rattle.

Hmmm... Do you think the 1.8L caused its death or even sped it up a little. You've got me worried now! I've got a slight leak from the rear of the gearbox that's been there for ages. I should probably look into it further. - Tim.

It would be nice to dream that my M18 had enough power to blow the gearbox, but I suspect that monstrous power house of an engine needs about 30 more ponies to get anywhere near stressing the box. It's most definately the sandy water I sat in for about 45 minutes back in January. The rear diff oil looked the same as what I just drained from the gearbox, so rear diff is going to need some work possibly, unless I caught it just in time. (excuse for a rear locker? The slight leak from the rear of your gearbox will require a new drive shaft number 2 (gearbox to transfer). That's what suzuki did to fix mine. Now that I'm tackling the gearbox myself I'm realising what an easy little job it was to replace shaft 2 that my suzuki dealer charged an exhorbitant price for.

Don't know if anyone's still interested in this thread, but basically it the Rear Main Bearing in the gearbox has gone, and I caught it in time not to damage any gears.
The Gearbox and Diff specialist reckons it has little to do with the dirty oil since he just fixed the same issue in another jimny, he suspects it's just litterally worn out. Jimny gearboxes are truly crap as it's now the second one he has attended to in the space of 1 month, both having less then 100,000k's on the clock.

glass gearboxs & they push over easy, any other distinguishing features wonder if it's a quality control issue with the bearing suppler, i'd say monleys started off like this but ended up destroying the whole box.
