If it was just the solenoid that is the problem you would still hear the starter spinning just not engaging. Still worth pulling down and cleaning the whole lot though

Not necessarily, and infact, not usually - the first thing that happens when the starter solenoid is actuated is that it pulls the bendix into mesh with the ring gear, closing the electrical contacts comes after that - the starter spinning and not cranking the engine is usually a sign of a bad bendix.

It is also possible (and quite common) for the contacts in the solenoid to wear with time and use, and when this happens, the solenoid engages the bendix, but does not close the contacts - end result - CLICK, NO crank and NO sound of starter spinning.

I have an old solenoid here that was replaced because of this exact symptom - I can let you have it if you'd like to check it out.

bit of a dig, I have a Sierra thats having starter issues. it sounds like it has a flat battery but I have just put a brand new charged one in. I have done sheps clicky starter fix but it hasnt changed anything. it engages and will turn the motor over maybe one turn and thats it. what should I be looking for. thanks guys.

There should be a heavy cable between the bellhousing and the battery negative make sure it's in place.

I took it out filled it with penetrene and chucked it on the battery and gave a good few spins.
put it back in and its good as new.

I bought a new starter motor 4 months ago and it clicks once then nothing happens... So would this work?

Most likely. It's that cheap that you can knock it up for around $30! Unless you have the gear at home. If it doesn't work I'd look at your connections then the quality of your battery!

Yeah the battery is just under a year old... I'll try and wire up the relay next weekend
