I might do it this weekend. It really shits me how high it sits. Will just do it with some flat bar and some bolts and some rubber. Nothing over complicated, just a clamp type.

My rola basket sits nice and low, I have the cross bars between the rungs on the basket and custom brackets.

Yeah I like how u did yours Atari. But that piece that is screwed into the racks, where did u get it? Is it s rolla piece!. I saw what u did with the flat bar, I have a similar idea.
Keen to get your input.

Yeah its a rola bit.... and they're not cheap from memory. Its an alloy extrusion to suit the shape of the inside of the cross bar where the rubber strip sits.

Anyone ever used extra racks to help spread the load?
I have 2 extra racks that I was thinking of placing in the middle of the other 2...
I don't plan on using a vortex basket, I may even make my own that is longer...

Thoughts??

4 probably overkill IMO, but I can certainly see the logic for 3.

I'll take your spare one

When you guys installed your tracks on the roof, did you use double sided tape and silicone around the holes or just cover the whole track with silicone and then rivet it down??

double sided tape & globs of silicone on each of the rivets & a blob on each hole.

yes a glob is different to a blob.

got a self serve wreckers around your way?

walk into the middle of the year with a cordless drill+ drill bits, allen keys, screw drivers, pointy & flat nose pliers.

stand on the bonnet of a car & look around like a pirate for your next set of racks. (parrot not required)

most of my collection that i'v scored have come from magna wagons, camry wagons, mazda wagons & the odd falcadore wagon.

Got my roof racks on today, went pretty smoothly, just used a strip of double sided tape up either side of each channel and silicone on each hole plus heaps all the way down the length of the channel and I used 4.8mm stainless 302 rivets, 5 of them on each channel, might add a few more down the track if needed but it's on bloody good and doesn't look to be going anywhere anytime soon haha, over all it's a pretty easy mod just make sure you get it in the right spot the first time, put the rivets in the holes and line them up front to back cos once that tape is down it doesn't wanna come back up lol

Hi guys, got the roof rack from a wrecker couple of days ago, probably cause the weather we'll have a couple of day off and we'd like to put them on. Do you all cut the bars (the Rola I mean) down to 775mm? Can I cut them with a hand hacksaw or do I need a proper disk one?

I also got a basket (an easy one made with metal mesh) for 50$ from a friend. Pictures are coming when the job will be done!

This is the basket:

should look good!

Edit: this is how it will look like, I need to buy a cutting disc for the grinder to cut the bars, hoping 775mm will be the right length!

All done, a bloody good job!

Just if someone else look about some infos in this topic the Rhino Rack website says that the length of the cross bars for the Vitara is 755mm and the guy who wrote down the how-to says to cut them at 775mm.
I don't know if it was a writing error or what but I just measured it and they fit perfectly with the size of 775mm so I did with this length.

A couple of picture of the result for you ;)

Later or next days I'll put on the basket!

I used 8mm high tensile bolts on my build 6 Each side and made plates for the underside of the roof to sandwich it and stop it tearing out if i hit a tree or what ever ,the runner rails from a Honda wagon (Subaru gx wagon ) freebies you can get them for $20 from the right wrecker , Then pajero whisper pro rack cross bars , And fitted a full length rhino xtray , Check out the build thread .
