I've got a hi mount winch for sale.

2hp motor, 28m steel cable, old style solenoids and hand controller.
Doesn't come with all power cables and the ones that are on it need replacing. Has a very slow leak from a seal in the lower housing. Otherwise stucturally in good condition. Does not come with bolts to bolt onto bullbar.
This was originally purchased for a project that is no longer going ahead. I tested it about a year ago and it worked, so no reason it shouldn't now.
I can also supply a spare 2hp motor which has had the internals coated, modified armature and breather fitted by Mal Leslie at no extra cost.

Obviously, it's not going to be that shiny.

The specs on these are awesome - they are reliable and fast and they'd out pull a lot of Chinese 12000lb winches.

However, they are very, very bulky to mount - they are tall and deep, even though they are narrower than a normal low mount.

They're also heavy.

Been there, done that :D I'd have to move EVERYTHING to do that to my car.

8 highs are super cool... just not really that practical for a Sierra.

I might be able to fit one behind my front grille as I don't have a front mounted radiator, but the weight is still nasty in front of the front axle.

Sorry for the Hijack Mistaboz.

LWB trayback, Full ruf + 6" of rear axle dragged back. almost 100" from memory.

You can just see the motor of the high mount above the top of the rear tyre. It has a heatsink on it as it's a 4.6hp motor.

It's a 6hp motor though as 4's never came with a heatsink :wink:

It might be 6HP - it's not my winch, (or car) but I think you're not 100% right. I have a very early XD9000 in my shed which has a factory heatsink, and it's definitely not a 6HP motor.

From memory the owner of that high mount winch has fitted a genuine XD9000 heat sink to an aftermarket motor, which might be 6HP. That winch has actually had lots of work done to it. Breathers, tie bars, 6HP motor, Albright solenoid, bearing support, grease nipples on everything, eliminated cir clips. It's a cool winch. Too cool to be rotting beside my shed with the rest of the car.

Interesting. Wasn't aware of another motor supplied by Warn which has a heatsink. Learn something new everyday.
So the car is off the road for good or getting the Gwagen treatment?

Owner doesn't have the $$ to finish it, so it's been sitting with no motor in it for years. It was a fun build though.

the XD9000 circa 1991 was the first Warn winch with a heat sink.

Many claim they are as quick or quicker. Very very few actually are.
I would say none are as reliable.

High mounts outperform low mount winches hp for hp. They have a more efficient gear train.

Not quite true Steve...There are two models of himount.
My Warn HiMount is NOT an 8274.
Mine is an 8074... OEM (dealer) fitment on CJ Jeeps.

Free spool release pin is the difference.

Low mounts can be made as quick as high mounts with mods, just like the high mounts can be made faster. I'd say both are as reliable as each other if similar quantity, ie. comparing warn low mount and high mount.

Lowmounts inherently suffer from more brake drag and have higher gearing reduction for the same load rating as a result. They're just not as efficient.

I've seen some very fast low mounts, but they have quite low load ratings. Adequate for a sierra for sure, but absolutely no match for a 8 high.

Ask those of us that bought early XD9000's which is more reliable. :roll:

How much weight in in the steel cable??
Could you replace it with rope and have something for suitable for the front of a Sierra?

Was just asking as I'm interested in building a zook for winch challenge events but didnt want a heavy winch, just small, reliable and fast.

zooky 08...russel mason from rocky runs a twin motor low mount in his gq shorty winch truck,i have watched this winch in person and its ridiculous. he makes them himself at home and they are fast.they are geared up a fair bit though so probably dont have the load rating of a high mount. i believe he is now also doing triple motor setups and machines up his air free spool etc.

a mate of mine,now runs one of his twin motor winches in his 45 series winch truck and last weekend at the winch challenge it opened everyones eyes,it is stupidly fast,at times probably too fast and scary. it outwinched a fellow competitors 4 motor gigglepin hi mount winch. He was having trouble getting enough battery power to run the low mount but all seems to be sorted now
