Hiya all,

I have a J20A which has a sensor hanging off the block above the engine mount and below the inlet manifold. It has a thin wire coming from it. The sensor seems to be weeping oil, however there is no oil on the engine mount below so can't be too bad... hopefully.

Does anyone know what the sensor is? Is it the Crankshaft position sensor?

The engine runs fine and the Check Engine Light doesn't come on so I assume it's not throwing a code. So I think the sensor is fine.

Should I be concerned about the weeping?

Thanks,
Ben

Having a look at the FSM I think maybe it's the knock sensor. Does it tend to leak?

Yeah it looks like the knock sensor, funny, I don't think mine's got one. What vehicle is it?

I'll have a look at the casting on mine tomorrow (when I'm back assembling the engine) and see if it goes near an oil passage.

No easy links out there, get on your favorite torrent engine and do a search for suzuki manual and you'll find it. About 60MB download from memory...

Yeah I didn't think my engine had a knock sensor either. It's a 2002 GV.

How does the knock sensor work? I thought it would have to poke through the block to sense knocking.

The engine runs very well at the moment so it definitely isn't knocking and the Check Engine Light isn't lit so the sensor must be working.

The FSM doesn't show the block from the drivers side so I don't know where the oil passages are. Harvs if you could check for the oil passages on the drivers side that would be great.

Stekky - this is the best I can do for the FSM link - see #15 - it's the only sensor on the intake side of the block.

TheOtherleft - the knock sensor is basically a piezoelectric microphone tuned to a particular frequency and screwed into the block - the tuning allows it to ignore all the other engine sounds and output only when knocking or pinging occurs.

Being a GV it probably does have it. Mines a '98 SV420, and it's missing a few things the GV FSM shows, like the crank angle sensor (it just has a rubber plug where it would go.) It's pretty likely though I'll have a spot in the casting for it which Ill look at...

I've never looked, as far as I know my 98 doesn't have one, and all the knock sensors I've seen simply screw into a boss on the block - I see no reason why this one should be any different.

Not all of the J20 engined GVs have the knock sensor - my 98 doesn't and it's not documented in the first release of the FSM (98~00), it's shown in the second release (00~01), and third release (02~?).

The same goes for the crankshaft sensor - 98~00 doesn't use it, 00~01 the FSM says "if fitted" so some have it, some don't, and 02 onwards apparently all have.

Well I guess it can't be the actual sensor leaking then.

Maybe the oil has splashed onto the sensor from when I changed the oil/ran the engine with the oil cap off to check for excess blowby etc.

I had a look tonight while working on it. Given mine doesn't even have a place for it to go (there's no empty threaded hole or anything like that.)

All the high pressure oil galleries are on the opposite side of the engine, all feeding from where the oil returns from the oil filter. So no, it won't be going into one of those.

However, as much as you might not like this thought, just below where the sensor should be (I imagine from the FSM) there is the joint in the crank case. Hopefully it's not weeping from there. Then again if it's just weeping it would be safe to ignore it.

Is the joint above the engine mount, as there's no oil on the mount. I'll have a closer inspection though.
