Here we go with making the borders and sewing it all together. The pieces are cut the same as the inserts, however with the base it's not a bad idea to cut it in half, mainly because one half is usually shagged, and smaller pieces are easier to get accurate, and make less waste.

Once one is cut, it's used to mark out the duplicates and mirrors.

Then the pieces are sewn together and the pockets in the bottom for the wires.

Back to the machine and the borders sewn on the inserts. These seats are easy beause they are symmetrical and so if you line up the centres and work back you will know where to start, hopefully you wind up in the right spot. For seats like split rears, you need to make check marks to line it all up. Finished and ready to go back on the frame

We'll find out Saturday morning I think most of them should, but the suede is very inflexible. Managed to get the skins on the door trims without wrinkles so fingers crossed.

Yes, all foam backed. Seats get 9mm and the door trims get 5mm. I don't think I can wait till Saturday. Might fit up a base before work tomorrow

Sorry for the delay....sometimes I think suppliers and couriers draw straws as to who is going to screw your day up.
Let's go back to door trims, as I was about to fit a seat cover when I found that one of the captive nuts was not so captive and had to weld it up so I set it aside to come back to it, then it was a supplier's turn to stuff it all up blah blah.
First, it pays to put some reference lines on the boards, so you know where to lay the panel.

With the panel in place

Now, if there is foam glued to the material, it needs to be trimmed off, being careful not to nick the material underneath. If you are just using plain vinyl, you would glue the foam to the board and trim it before glueing the cover on

Then, apply your glue, and while it's tacking off, trim the corners and edges ready to fold over


Pull the corner tabs over first, then usin a rolling upward action with the palm of your hand, fold the vinyl over and press it down. Using the palm of your hand makes a smoother edge as the foam compresses evenly and doesn't give you a bumpy finish

All done - put on your clips and fit to the door

Here are a couple of pics of the seat progress. The passenger seat is ready to bolt in and the Driver's is waiting for the back then it will go in as well. Tomorrow now I'll have them in.

its a shame you couldnt "bucket" the seat some more and add more high density foam to the bum for more comfort =)

Yeah, I could've done that, but it's much easier and more effective to fit some later model seats, and my self imposed challenge with this job was to make as eye catching a rig as I could without changing from original equipment. I find the seats reasonable in terms of space and comfort, but then I haven't driven it out of the carpark, so after my first trip to Scenic Rim there may be a pair of pretty seats going cheap

I'm 6'4" and 120kg. I couldn't stand to be in the OEM ute seats for more than 45 mins at a time. ANd they were in fantastic condition. (sold on ebay for $176.00 ) I now have recaros, and can drive with my knees wrapped around my head ( same as before the seat swap) for atleast 2 hours, making the ute a much better runaround vehicle than before.

But if you are shorter and not a fat bastard, then you should be fine

6'1" and 95kg. Most of my travel is the 1.4km to work and return, running around town the occasional trip to brissie. Jake's '88 WT has not bad looking seats - plenty of shape and an integrated headrest. Once all the hoopla of building this thing is over I might keep my eyes open for a pair, assuming they'll fit though I'm certain they will, and see how I can put this design into them. I think that would modernise the look of KT as well. What's a project if you can't keep working on it. The other thing I would do, and I didn't this time because when I started this I didn't have seats that could fold forward, is to fit some map pockets on the back of them, and to make a net on the bulkhead. All that space is useful, and I think I'll give some imagination to how to maximise this area.

I'm 6" and 118 kg's I'm trying to find a decent seat for a bit more comfort for the coily that will bolt in without too much grief.....any suggestions

You will be doing well to find a seat that requires little to no modification to fit a coily. The mounts are very different to a leafy.

MAybe PM bigrig91 and ask what his seats were out of... I modded them mounts for them but can't remember what car they came from

They were a bit of work to make fit, but worth the effort IMO. Sierra seat suck
