Hi,
Im looking at getting a myself a zook but was after some opinions. I was looking at either a Jimny or a Vitara. I want something newish as i will also be using it as a daily, so i want air con pwr steer fuel inj etc.
So what ive been looking at is either a 98 ish vitara or a 03ish jimny.
Which ones the better car, which is easiest/cheapest/better to mod. Most id probably do is a lift, some tires and possibly a rear locker depending on how much offroad use it gets.
I was looking at spending about $8k. This too much for a 98 vitara Jlx with 107,000km?
Thanks for any advice

the main thing is you picked 2 good ones, not a vit and a pajero or something stupid
pick the one that looks the tidiest and you like driving, both have their good and bad points, but they are both still better than anything else

What are their good and bad points? From what I've seen. The vitara only weighs 100kg more but has a good 70nm and 30kw more. The vitara doesn't have a live front, but idk what the benefits are for a 4wd.

size is your deciding factor.... the vit is larger inside than the jimny and has a larger engine - but the jimny will have VVT.
if i was doing lots of long drives or touring i'd get the vit, if its a weekend toy and just something to get to work and back i'd get the jimny.
Either way you'll be happy.

Is the 1.3 Lacking in the jimny for offroading, is the 2L in the vit prefered? Also, i can afford a Jimny with the m13 but probably without the vvt as theyre a little out of my price range.

1.3 is fine offroad... its long drives that it shows its weakness, especially holding 100km/hr up a long hill, more prominent if theres a headwind, but like everything you get used to it and drop it down a gear before the hill etc =)

Hmm, on another look, it looks like SWB GVs are in my price range too. Are they capable or just a soft roader? Are they more expensive to modify?

the swb GV's up to 2005? are a short gv wagon with live rear end and chassis and low range and so on, still a good thing
are jimnys slow on the highway? anyone with one care to comment? I get the feeling cause people say 1.3 sierras are slow on the highway that all 1.3's must be

jimnys are faster than sierras due to EFI and newer engines, marginally better aerodynamics too. but yes, theyre still 'slow'. my uncles VVT jimny cant keep up with me with the 1.6EFI on hills at 100km/hr unless he uses 4th.

thats not a bad effort though. when my mate had a vvt jimny he could well and truely pull away from my sierra. i think jimny would be ok on the hwy where as the 1.3 sierras are just about unbearable

Alright, so other than speed
Out of:
02 Jimny
98 Vitara
02 SWB Grand Vitara
With a Probably a 50mm lift AT tires and/possibly a rear locker
Which one would you buy and WHY :)

I'm also a big fan of the M eng's..

I agree your car is friggen awesome Gus, but how much coin have you spent to get it to the above mentioned awesomeness??
jim's are a good base that will take you place's straight out of the box, slightly bigger A/t's & go play..
Thay will also sit happily on 100kph, you'll struggle a lil loaded, but you'll still get there..
 Jimny..

about the being loaded. We usually drive bout 2-3 hours outta sydney. If i were to get any of these, i would only carry me +1 and tent, bbq, esky table etc. So yeah maybe 100kg of kit at the most. Jimny should be right?
Thanks for putting up with all these questions btw
