This is gonna be fun..
There was about 1/2 hr of light left,, so I thought that I would have a go at getting to the Thermostat without removing too much.. So just took off the Air intakes.. HHAhaha
You can't even get into there with a socket - sticks out too far, and there's no room for a ring spanner cause its too long...
Gonna be pulling stuff out like steknig said

AAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrffffffggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh
So I swung the Alternator around,,, both Bolts out of the Thermostat case, but it won't slide off of the Thermostat case outlet pipe.. Would this just be because I am pushing against the hoses.. or am I forgetting something?
Cheers

You only need to take the black plastic part off, the bit the hose goes on, 3 10mm headed bolt's from memory..

problem is no tools fit in there, unless i remove the manifold....
Plus I just cranked it with a Jimmy Bar.. Which has free'd it up... Just need to disconnect the hose to the Thermostat cap and I can do it on a work bench...
Nothing like over committing.

Ok, I will in the morning, as soon as I can see... just looked like a lot of wires going onto it... I'm a total chicken pulling things out... its crazy, cause I can't wait to cut a hole in the panels for a snorkel, but pulling a few bits off the engine, and it puts me in a cold sweat.

##NOTE##
NOT RECOMMENDED for People with Big Hands, & Bad Tempers
Finally got the Case out today, was un-able to remove the Alternator as previous tamperers have threaded the final bolt on it so It was in the too hard basket..
I found that if you remove the white plastic clip that holds the throttle cable, you can remove the 2 bolts holding the Alternator then swing the Alternator down quite low. Once the top 2 hoses are removed from the Thermostat Case, Heated up the Large bottom hose - that traces back to the Radiator, twist the Case back and forth a few times, line it up with the available space, and give it a yank.. hey presto.
So it took me a long time to get the case out, 10 minutes to give it a good clean and replace the Thermostat, and about an hr to get it all back in, including the air hoses etc.

Gee peter I wasn't gonna say anything after seeing all the trouble you've gone too and you've done a super fine job too.
I was hoping you put the thermostat in its housing with the little brass thing and its hole to the top. I'm sure you did as this greatly helps with letting air out of the housing when filling with water.
It looks like you did, I hope your Jim is much happier now.

I'll find out on Saturday, Going to be following a 80 Series around all day, see If I can put his 6inch lift & 37 inch tyres to shame... or just embarass myself .. Did have a screeetch coming from the fan belt when I finished, hadn't pushed the alternator down hard enough.
Only had a problem in heavy boggy sand, so this should be a good work out.

So the next job has just begun.. Want to replace the heater core, while I'm fitting the central locking and changing the standard speakers over.
How do you get the dash out of these things?
Found the screws where, under and around the head unit + ash tray, near the doors, 2 where the speedo is, 3x in the glove box, So now the bottom is all loose & floppy but it still doesn't want to just Yank out,, How do you detacd it from the top? does it all come out in 1 peice?
Cheers
Peter
