IVE JUST FINISHED A DUEL BATTERY INSTALLATION IN JIMNY. AT THE MOMENT IV'E TAKEN A WIRE FROM POSITIVE TERMINAL VIA CUTOUT SWITCH ON DASH TO ISOLATOR. IN MY PREVIOUS GQ I RAN THIS FROM THE IGNITION WIRE SO THAT THE ISOLATER WAS OFF WHEN IGNITION WAS OFF. AFTER READING ROYCES BIT ON HEADLIGHT WIRING I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN DO THIS.
ANY IDEAS?

is it a solenoid type isolator? you would be better off with it wired to acc so they are isolated when cranking, otherwise you can burn wires and flatten batteries accidently (so I am told, never had a problem)

or better yet get a voltage sensitive relay, something like this

I think Royce is right, you are far better off with a voltage sensitive dual battery isolator. The one below is from Supercheap and costs about $95 with all of the cabling required to put the second battery in.

On this one, I ended up running the red wire to the ignition so if the ignition is off or on accessory, the isolator is definitely off. By default it was connected to the main battery terminal of the isolator. The blue wire tucked away at the back right will force the isolator on if it is switched to earth.
