As the title says I'm just trying to find out what sizes ppl have gone up to with standard diffs and what small mods have been done to go a bit bigger?

33's on zook diffs have better clearance than hilux diffs on 35's

33"s are generally regarded as the max size before breakages become more frequent than non-breakages. In saying that the last 10 times i have gone out i have broken 2 x CV's, 1 welded rear, twisted 2 x rear axles and bent 1. That is on 31's with lockers. 33"s with no lockers should be alot easier on the driveline. I had 33"s on my last one with 2" spring, 2" shackles and 2" bodylift ( note: hammering of firewall/wheelarch is required along with re-drilling spring perch 15mm to move diff slightly forward)

If you run Chromo from shafts/ CV's you should have a fairly reliable package on standard diffs, 33's and a locker.

If you wanna drive a zook, then use zook running gear... If you want Hilux running gear, drive a Hilux :P

All depends on what you drive and how you drive it.

I have driven on 31's for 5 years with dual lockers (which might make it easier on the axles and drivetrain) and never broken anything. I tend to take the slow and steady approach and don't thrash it when 4wding though.

I have heard of a few people running 35's but I would guess that they were driving carefully. There is a fair few people around who drive on 33's and it would seem that they do not have too many issues.

I think the next conversion for the Sierra will be full RUF with chasis extension and inboarding of front springs so I can run 33's. (I might have it done in a couple years time at my current rate :P)

Don't worry, Joeblow lives off Suzuki's.

35's on lux's sound nice. Will be going bundys soon with 35's or more, as i am over suzuki diffs on 33's. break, twist, snap, seize. Buh!

want33s is about to put 35s on his zook. I don't see any Toyota diffs in his build up thread (correct me if I'm wrong). So, why take a zook and make it a non-zook just for the sake of it?

only about 2 years ago it was widely accepted that a 31" tyre was the utter most you'd want to run on standard suzuki diffs... now people or throwing in the odd 33" tyre to the mix - but the drivelines havent changed have they? =) I think people are being greedy and stretching the limits a bit...

i'd say 31's and drive it like a sierra... or, 33's and really baby it.

As much as i am guily of babying mine on 31's, im yet to do ANY damage - AT ALL! *touch wood* other than a bent front diff housing.

My mate has 31x10.5 tyres on his and stock gearing.
He gives it an absolute flogging off road to get anywhere.

I run 32x9.5 pedes (33" OD) with 6.5 gears and a locker.
I get much further as you would expect, but the way the car drives is completely different.

I am running stock xfer case mounts, and no additional bracing.

My rear axles have been slightly twisted since before i've had it (before the locker), and it hasnt become any worse. His rear axles are fine.

To fit the bigger tyres...
2" BL, 2" suspension lift on both cars.
My car has had the diff moved forward and inch, and the wheel arches hammered to hell. It still scrubs and needs a guard chop.

I have also found I replace brakes more often, and have a hard time stopping (thus the brake upgrades im doing)

He DD his on 31s, I put the stockies back on.

I have 2 cars that i like to swap between themselves. So mine is a 1/2 daily. And i get wear and tear with 33's.

If people DD on 35's in lux's, landies, cruisers, pootrols etc. Whats wrong with zooks!?

Can you explain what you mean by this? Are doubletoughs a "small mod?" and what size tyre you want to run?

The group of us running 34"+ tyres in the Vic suzuki club don't experience diff/axle breakage any more, but it's not that straightforward to explain where the cutoff will be, and it all depends on what you're driving, how you drive, and how much you are willing to spend.

We don't drive high traction surfaces like the NSW guys do, but we also use lots of throttle, clutch dumps/ bounces etc. The front limit is about 31/32" stock, the rear limit is about 34" stock for us, but for you it might be different.

Which is all well and good in theory but what do you do when you are already on 33 inch tyres and still smashing you undecarriage on rocks ;)

Based on a SWB you could go to 35's which will give you an extra inch of clearance but to safely and effectively do that you need both wheel track and wheel base extensions, both of which need a fair bit of modding. Or for a similar amount of mods you could go to Lux diffs and have the ability to run a 37 inch or more sticky and achieve a shitload more clearance.

As said it all comes down to what your plan is with the car, trailer queen, comp car or DD and what terrain you plan on driving. Personally if its a DD or mild comp car and you are only aiming for a 35 inch tyre then run cromo's front and rear and stick with 34's, you will piss all over most cars out there and shouldnt have too many breakages. Hilux diffs shouldnt even be thought about until you are looking at 37's or bigger.

Biggest issue with 35s I find is clearance of the guards. If u snap axles or cvs good excuse to upgrade. I daily mine on 35s

Who needs 33's. Some of the most capable Sierras I have seen only have
2 or 3" lift, a good set of 31's, a locker and chromo axles. Very reliable
set up, and IMO that's what you ultimately want, a good reliable set up. Not
something that you have to spend weeks on fixing after one run out in the
bush.

I know many have had front CV's, axels and diff centers break on 33's and most go to cromos, but what about the rear? Is anybody having CV's etc break in rear diff set ups on 33's??
