What i noticed though is the tendecy of the zombie world survivors to pick big hulking american brutes to drive around in. i mean the things are freakin gas guzzlers
Myself i see the Suzuki sierra (alright the same era vitara too) as the ultimate post apocalyptic vehicle, they are simple, robust, can climb over curbs and panic strewn-detrius, fit through spaces most other car don't and have good fuel economy for a carby engine.
Hardtop/soft tops protection aside i think i would keep my sierra stock with the only conventional mod being the addition of Long range fuel tank (ok maybe loot some tyres, but nothing massive)
Then it the mods would be
Get rid of all the pollution gear like the cat conveter
Jet the carb so it a point was rich enough to run a lean ethanol (scaveging fuel like metho and other solvents, the ability to make it once petrol runs out)
an ENDLESS AIR set up from an aircon
have a euro-style gas carb so i could run jury-rigged lpg bbq cylinders and a woodgas convertor
Small light 3x3 trailer to carry scavenged supplies with an emergency release mechanism in case it gets stuck or is slowing me down.(maybe a small sub-80kg pitbike or scooter for scouting mounted on a rear rack with tool stowage)
So what other ideas to people have, it doesn't necessarily have to be zombies, the above is suited for the mad-max post end war scenarios etc. Basically something that you have to survive indefinately without infrastructure (LJ's are cool too but would suit more as an auxilary vehicle)
Who knows, maybe some interesting tech ideas come up that can be applied to veryday rigs

santos.......
A- you have to get out more.
B- carbies?....those who have carbies will be left behind and shot..(or recieve some bum lovin depending on said mood of zombies). those with webbers better hand themselves in now and get it over with.
C- has to be auto.
D- alloy front GV owners refer section 'B' and change 'carby' for 'alloy front diff'.

lol joebloe my reply came after yours. it was meant to be before
but seriously...
Auto, hard to get good fuel economy if its a carb and one of the reasons you can't buy a pre 2004 auto in brazil is the self taught greas monkeys cant service them and they break long before the manual box
The stock aisin carby. Runs period, in tune, out of tune, no electrics, ieven if the vacuum hoses are joked, i wouldn't go the webber.
What i would concede is maybe a basic piggy back MPFI system with wideband o2 would be good, run a seperate set of lines and an external fuel pump. Run it and keep the carby circuit as a fallback
I may need to get out more but damn it when i do at least my zook will make it there!

Bonnet mounted large calibre machine gun maybe? Slider mounted retractable blades for carving through pesky panic stricken citizens trying to hitch a ride as you flee from swarming zombies. Just ideas...

thats a bit rich isn't it? thinking south america will still be on the map...c'mon.
ditch the aisin for a mikuni, quicker field servicing (leaving more time for brazilian women).
vit 4 speed autos don't break or have a weak link called a clutch. trust me....i'm trying to break mine, but not happening.

i am thinking.. large front bar to force anything under the wheels insted of on your bonnet, duel 50cal saw's on the roll bar, controlled with buy a joystick system with hud (heads up display) also running 2000round belt clips.
knee hight 6ft chainsaw blades that can come out from under the doors.. yeah that will fuck em
fuel would have to run of a ethanole blend, can make a still to run in the back on in a tralor..
multiple flash creators, this being if zombies requre sight still.. distorting them and makeing them easyer to kill..
i am thinking a auto 2.. makes it easyer to controll your joysticks for the 50cal's
also what type of zombies are we talking about.. some are fast, some are slow, some are damb right EVIL.. like are we talking dead snow zombies? i am legend zombies? or zombie land zombies?? or shawn of the dead zombies?
this is all importan infomation to have before the said T virus is released!

Already exists... and in use in Afghanistan/Iraq. pictured below is a remote weapon system with .50 that mounts on vehicles featuring thermal/nightvisions and all good stuff hooked up to a little screen with joystick

Carbies are good, but what you want is a big bore single cylinder 2 stroke diesel from an old Lanz Bulldog tractor:
Will run on vegetable oil, creosote or just about anything that will burn, good fuel economy, will run in either direction, can be started by rocking the flywheel backwards and forwards by hand.
The vibrations might be a bit much in a Suzuki though.....
