You run a points dizzy :?: Sounds like you have a fuel blockage somewhere in the carb. When was it cleaned and overhauled?

Simple fix. Go to a carby specialist. You'll not have another poor idle drama for a long long time after that.

Zook carbys have really small internal passages and idle jets. It doesnt take much crap to block them up. Either clean it yourself if you have the skills or get someone to clean/rebuild it for you. Run a second fuel filter between your fuel pump and the carby inlet too.

Oh, and zooks dont have points

Hi lukes_89,

It doesnt sound like an electrical/ignition problem to me, definitely a carby problem, sounds like the primary/idle jet is blocked if it only runs when you give it gas...

I agree with Reubs, take it to a carby specialist !

try this.
swap #2 and #3 plug leads around and start the motor, make it backfire heaps. swap the leads back and check that all the vacuum lines are connected
properly.

if that gets a good idle then you will need to clean the idle and fuel cutout bits of the carby.
you should also hear a click from the carby when ya turn the ignition to run if not
then the fuel cutout solenoid is stuffed.

also replace the fuel filter near the tank with the correct filter( it has a bit of a water trap thing built in)
and put a filter between the fuel pump and the carby. i will say it again as it is important.
put a filter between the fuel pump and the carby.
i stuffed around for ages with a non idling car and the only way to fix it properly is to
clean out the carby and fit new filters.

and remember it is petrol not gas, gas is for taxi's

check your idle solenoid on the side of the carbi has power. This happened to mine recently as this lost all power so the car wouldn't idle. i could start it but as soon as i took my foot off the car would die.

chadd1981, same problem, but intermittent. Idles good 90% of the time. but when changing down to stop (particularly), you can see the tacho dropping to zero and then won't idle at all when you have to stop.
(Revving fuck out of the Zook at the lights to keep it going....
........not a real good look..........won't fuck'n idle, will it)
Going again, up through the gears, it'll clear and idle perfect at all stops..
.. till the next..yep.
Worked this out but, before restarting, push the accelerator to the floor and let it off fully, and then restart it, it'll idle perfect (no more trying to keep it going at the lights, just do that)

This sound like yours?

No mine was totally different as mine would not idle full stop, even after revving the engine. As soon as the revs dropped the engine died. Started straight up and as long i had my foot on the accelerator a little keeping the revs above 1500. i tested the power to the soleniod and there was nothing so traced it back and discovered that the relay was diead, changed that and all my problems were fixed.

Had that problem... would only really happen after coming off the highway after about half an hour or more. Carby rebuild & tune = problem fixed.
