for some reason i turned my car on to clean out the radiator and engine left it running for like 30mins, i was then playing with my lights and so forth. For some reason if i flick my high beams on the temp gauge rises to the top of the yellow box just before the red section on my temp gauge. the little tab on my thermo stat is broken so it doesn't have the best contact but soon as i turned the lights off it dropped back to just below half way. any one have any idea why this would be is it something to do with the current of power making the gauge rise when i turn the lights on or is the car over heating?
thanks luke

it could be an earth problem by the sounds of it...
P.S. i know nothing about sierra's & their magical ways... i'm sure someone older & wiser will chime in anytime...

I had the same deal with mine, and as Gus says, it was an earth problem, get some welding earth lead, make a length to go from the battery to the body, no dramas.

The battery should be earthed to the body. The block should also be earthed. I would also be replacing your temp sender by the sounds of it.

you cant earth a battery everything earths to it
what happens is there is too much resistance in your earth from body to battery, so when higher current items that are earthed to teh body (headlights) are on the voltage differential on the voltage regulator changes so it outputs higher and makes the gauge rise
your fuel gauge should rise too
New earth firewall to battery will fix it, chassis or block wont

I have some heavy duty earth welding lead if you want some, cost of freight only, then you only need to get ends put on, I went to an electrical store, and bought a $3 end that I bolted to the body, the other just went into the battery terminal.
I used this for my starter motor lead as well, the skinny crap that was on it is nothing by comparison, and it spins so much faster now.

With the Zook it is important that the body, chasis and engine are all grounded correctly. The Zook switches the ground unlike Aust and US cars.
Heavy duty lead works wonders and helps stop all those little electrical gremlins.

Nothing I can add that hasn't been mentioned already. However, if you're gonna need a new sender I'd suggest just getting an aftermarket gauge. It'll cost a bit more but will come with the sender.

To give you a basic example of the differnet power switching as follows:
Ground Switching - The Switch is located on the ground side of the Load (Light etc). Asian Vehicles
Power Switching - The switch is located on the Power side of the load (Light etc). Aust and USA
Australian Standards for All electrical Equipment except for Asian Cars is to switch the power.
