i was driving then when i clutched it wouldnt disengage till i had my foot har down and it would shutter thro the clutch pedal and hardly go in gear
*and wouldnt idle properly while the clutch was in like it was still grabbing
i drove like this 4 about 4 ks and it didnt change just wanted 2 get home
*then i pulled ova turned the car off played with the cable a bit and got back in still did it then got 2 the lights put the clutch all the way in and when i went 2 take off it worked fine like nothing had happened

now it drives fine no problems at all even put it in 4th at 30ks and put foot flat and it didnt slip or anything

its got my baffled im yet 2 get under it and see if i can spot anything as i really dont want it happening again

ive had a fair few clucths go in my time even had 1 set fire 2 its self in the box and ive neva felt anything like this b4 and really cant think of what could cause this


unless something was caught under the clutch plate and the flywheel causeing it 2 not disengage when the clucth is in and causing it 2 shake or possible a plate off the clutch caught between it

That was my thought too. I'd be pulling the box out for a quick look

Lump is right, That is a sign of a pressure plate going out. I am a master VW Tech (11yrs)and in my expierance with VW that is a sign of the pressure plade cracking, one of the fingers braking, one or more of the fingers loosing its tension or the thrust bearing going out or it could have spun in the shift fork.

To add to that, It mite be going bad but dont worry about it unless it happens again.

Maybe it is a problem with the clutch cable. V.W.DAVE I'm sure you'd know about clutch shudder in rear engined VWs when the cable isn't curved correctly.

Being a 4WD, maybe the cable has some mud/rust issues causing it to stick. It may even be loose and not seated properly or something.

Just guessing but would be worth considering before replacing the clutch.

look at the cable as well, make sure is hasnt moved on the mount off the block and that it isnt collapsing where it bends round the bottom hose

Checking the cable is never a bad idea but with the way the clutch is set up on the zooks if the cable is bad it will keep it in one place it wouldnt come and go like it did. Replacing the cable is cheap and I would recomend replacing it with the clutch. after all it would be as old as the car and it is a moving part that is always being used and they tend to stretch.

If I had to put all my cookies into one basket without looking at it my self, I would say the pressure plate is on its way out or on the clutch it self the rivets or pads are coming loose.

But as I said before I wouldnt do anything till it happend again. You never know it might have been soming thing to do with the motor running crazy or something. and the bad or ruff running might have caused the clutch to feel odd to you.
Or even a more far fetched thing there might have been some oil that got into the clutch that made it slip a little causing the feeling you got.

Ignore it till it happens again.
