Post subject:  stupid transfer case again!

while at stockton beach on saturday i notice my transfer case was making a grinding noise like a bearing was gone. only happneds when in 4wd and at speed, 3rd +, wasnt as bad if you accelerate or back off, but if you found the sweet spot it would sound very bad.
anyway the only thing i can put it down to is the front output bearing is gone? i had the transfer case rebuilt with new bearings ect not long ago so i am finding it hard to believe the front output bearing is gone. there is also bit of movement in the output flange.
ive got a spare front out put thingo thats got a bearing in it. dont knwo the condition of it though but its feels alright. might put that on and see how it goes then.
but what eles would cause this problem?

also would i need to take the transfercase out to replace this or could i do it with it still in the car?

if it is it woulnt suprise me but the unis do feel ok. i am thinking its in the transfer case as i noticed on saturday it leaks oil when in 4wd

would also add my front shaft slip joint is worn out and there is movement in that causing vibrations

yeah since it only did it in 4wd and not in 2wd it sounds like that... could it also be the front ring or pinion bearing?

posible but i did a few test runs and found it will only do it in 4wd hubs locked in or not still does it. it wont do it when at full throtle and it wont do it at no throtle unless you hit a bump or somthing that loadeds up the drivetrain. so the only thing it could be is a bearing? nothing eles? sort of need to know asap so i can make an order for parts. my vit brakes came today and would love to get them on asap but need brake pads so it will all be in the 1 order

Um maybe, might be difficult though. Dropping a case is fairly quick and easy.

taking it out is easy. its just putting it back in! and a roctoy ring doesnt help. i will probably drop the case i dont know depends how i feel when i do it

ive got no ider what it could be. the only 2 things it could be is a worn shaft or a bearing? the front is only driven by a shifter dog isnt it? so it has to be a bearing or a worn shaft. if its a bearing ill give ya a PM. ive got a spare bearing and shaft but i dont know the conditions of them.

have you checked the unis in the front drive shaft, you kill them pretty quick in a spoa car.

I had what sounds like the a similar problem recently, and it was the rear output flange nut was loose.

Wouldn't make the noise in 2wd, only 4wd, and only at part load, not full throttle or coast, and only at speed.

Having said that, if your front output feels loose, but the nut is tight, maybe you have broken the little piddly shaft where the front output shaft fits into the mainshaft?

From memory the front output can be removed without taking the case out, once you have the shifter and 4wd switch and detent ball out.

bingo, thats the winner. exacely what i got. im going to pull it out friday and have a look see whats going on. ive got a spart front shaft as you see in my pic there. the frontout nut is going to need some heat, i put threadlock on it so it wouldnt come lose as ive had it come lose once. maybe once the case worn in the nut was no longer at full tention as the gears are only still new
