Post subject:  Door lock cleaning

The worn well used key I have works for the ignition but not on the drivers, passengers, or rear door, which means it cannot be locked - that is a bit of a security risk to me.

I took the drivers door lock out and took it to an auto lock specialist who looked up the code on the lock out of the door, I was thinking easy solution. But wait there is more to it.

He cut a new key which should have fitted and worked, but it didn't. He asked if he could take the lock apart and see what the issue is. - I said sure as the price was still lower than a complete new set.

He called me back this after noon saying no need he had fixed the issue.

Being an old off road vehicle it had basically got the lock filled up with dirt, preventing the key from sitting where it should.

The solution was to get some brake clean and silicon lube, not WD40 or CRC as they attract the dirt, and clean and soak the locks in brake clean until the dirt dissolves, and a bit of fine point squirting and keep going until you key goes in and works the lock, then lube it up with the silicon spray, or alloy based lubricant to keep it going into the future.

Happy cheap solution and something which others may have issue with

Tomorrows jobs are wiring and cleaning the other locks out and picking up the lock which now works

Joy I love cheap fixes
