Folks

I have a Sierra transfer that jumps out of 4wd into 2 wad whilst doing steep climbs.

The transfer case (4.9 gears with twin sticks shifters) is in my LG and is clocked to a more vertical position to fit in the tunnel. I have removed the middle ball bearing locator/lockout as it was jamming due to the case being more vertical. I’ve had it apart twice and nothing looks worn or broken.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome

In my opinion, it's because you're removed the middle detent ball. I did the same thing in preparation, (I thought) for fitting twin sticks and in my case it would jump out of high 2 into neutral on road under light load.

It's the reason I went for a Twisted T shifter as it retains the detent ball. Many years later, it's never jumped out of gear.

Hmmm interesting, does yours still have the middle bearing removed. If so this could be my answer

No, I put the ball back because the twisted t shifter has the correct detents to retain it and allow 2 low/ true neutral, so it doesn’t pop out of gear. It’s why I went with it rather than twin sticks.

Because of the angle my transfer is at the ball tends to go one way( can’t remember) so it either jams or locks in one of the modes. So I don’t think this will work for me

Maybe smoothing the transition on the detent on the shift rail would help?

Yes something like that might work, just had a read about the twisted shifter, they say you can remove the ball?? Also do you find it more sloppy than a normal shifter?

No, the ball stays in- that’s the point. I had the ball out on anticipation of twin sticks, then had it jump out of gear, so fitted the twisted T because it retains the interlock ball but has three positions on both rails so the rails stay put regardless of position.

Personally I think it’s a pointless modification for my application. I don’t use 2wd Low and a don’t flat tow so true neutral isn’t a big deal either.

The lever doesn’t work anything like stock and it’s not intuitive at all because it rests in the same position in 2 or 4wd. The two patterns are overlaid- you basically put it in 2 or 4WD then move the lever back to high or low, you can’t tell by looking at the lever. I’ve had it in the car for 13 years or something and it’s still not intuitive.

Ok thanks, doesn’t sound like this would work for me and the shift pattern doesnt work either by the sound of it. I might have to just lock mine in low and have 2 or 4 selectable. Might work, just thinking allowed. At the comp on the weekend having quick shift to 2wd drive was a big advantage. High is only ever used to go to and from the tracks
