My 2001 Jimny has a cooked engine, I had been thinking of an engine upgrade so the issue is now more urgent.
Have been looking at fitting a J20A engine, my Jimny is auto which I would like to keep, is this combination feasible?

I've been led to believe that the automatic in the Jimny is close to the upper end of it's range with the G13, so maybe a J20 along with an AW4 - but seriously - start with a tape measure, I'm not sure you can squeeze a J20 under the bonnet - it's quite a bit taller than a G13.

Anything is possibl with enough work and compromises, but I'm going to suggest the J20 isn't going to fit easily length or height wise. J20's only barely fit in a Sierra and there's no room for a fan between the engine and radiator. I can't imagine a Jimny offering any more room.

The Jimny auto won't last behind a J20. No way. You'd need the AW-4 that came behind the J20.

The easiest upgrade for you would be to get hold of a Baleno G16B and a lucky 13 adapter to mate it to your Jimny auto. You could then run Jimny manifolds with the longer stroke motor and everything will fit more or less like stock. The auto will still be on borrowed time, but with a close eye on a trans temperature gauge and maybe additional cooling, it should be OK.

I have seen a jimny with a J24 and auto in it so it does fit. And it fit well, looked like it was factory.

Car didnt run a body lift from memory, but could be wrong there, if he did he did a good job of getting the stock bumpers to line up well and the car was overall still relatively low. It also still rerained air con. It used the J24 auto (and engine) from a new GV from memory and ran through a jimny auto transfer so he ran bigger tires and the gearing was good.

Thing was an absolute weapon!

Never looked at them back to back, but have owned both and the jimny bay seems bigger.

For example i have seen a m18 in a sierra and it looked very big, far too big for the bay. In a jimny the m13 looks small and an m18 looks just right. Height wise i am almost sure there is more on the jimnys

Yuk. Jimny's have alarmingly high underbonnet temperatures compared to a Sierra (because the engine bay is well sealed) a J24 is going to produce a significant amount more heat.

Guy drove it in 50deg heat smashing limiter at low speeds and didnt have an issue. Much higher than anything we will get here.

So much so that i have overheated every car i ever owned over there and took my fair share of engines in the process
