Hi all I was dreaming about a conversion for the Sierra. Rover aluminuim v8, Harley, Hayabusa, rotary, plus the standard ones. Anything, that would fit and i could get cheaply and put in easily myself. Only a conversion isnt cheap. Or, um, swift. And, then it happened. I ran out of oil on the way to work under hard driving. My 95 sierra blew up miles from home on a very steep and demanding targa section of the Cradle Mountain Road, in Tasmania. Bang it went with a big puff of smoke. It was filled with diesel oil on the road side and used the last spray of start ya bastard i had. And, it fired right up and got me to work and got me home 80km or so. Great engine huh. So am left with what i have. A g13ba thats proven itself And, still goes. And, everything fits where it should over a conversion. So went parts hunting and found a rebuild kit on ebay for $180! Pistons rings gaskets bottom end bearings. $180 for an engine rebuild, seems too good to be true. Enough saved for a set of extractors and a new timing belt! And, thought i would ask here first if anyone has used these ebay kits with any good results or bad? |

Go a g16 baleno engine If you ran out of oil under hard load I doubt a basic rebuild kit will get you back on the road. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The cost in rebuilding a g13 properly is in machining. G engines being alloy and open deck makes the bores unstable and prone to ovalisation. You won’t know if the rebuild kit is appropriate unless the bores ante checked for ovality and if they are you’ll need to have the engine bored, which has to be done with a torque plate installed. Lots of people throw these cheap rebuild kits in and get no time at all out of the motor before it’s smoking again and down on compression. |

Not to mention that the big ends on the block and crank are most likely well shagged and unrepairable due to oil starvation Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks, very good points. I just saw how cheap it was on ebay and ,,,,, You all just saved me a bundle. Thank you. I didnt even think about the crank and there is no way a standard size piston ring would fit properly. And, i didnt know about the block even being aluminium, so wear rates would be higher for sure. |

One thing that you need to know is that the G13 (as is the G16) blocks have Iron sleeves in the cylinders. This eliminates the fast wear found in pure aluminum blocks. But it does limit the amount of boring that you can do in the cylinders. It is also possible that the sleeves can break loose under severe stress like the engine locking up due to lack of lubrication. Oversized pistons are available, but only a complete disassembly by an engine rebuilder will determine if your engine is savable. A used 1.3 engine - rebuilt or as-is - is pretty cheap (at least in the USA) and simple to install. It is also pretty inexpensive to swap in a G16 8 or 16 valve engine with an adapter and some wiring changeouts. I hope that this helps |

hi all i was quoted $1000 just for the bore. Anyway, after i regained consciousness and my clacker fully recovered, i managed to find a good 1.3lt and gearbox locally for about the same price from Brad the suzuki guy in Hobart.. And, will have the spare motor and box for a rebuild at a later date or parts. Brad is awesome to deal with too. |

A full machine and rebuild using suzuki genuine parts is a circa $6k job. There’s a reason we run g16b’s for $500 |
