Hi Folks,
So I've read lots of threads already and got nowhere, here is a tiny bit of background. Over the past month or 2 I've noticed the Jimny had a slight miss starting from second gear at low rpm's (after turning a corner) and in particular when you need torque up a slight incline.

Fast forward to yesterday, I had noticed the valve cover gasket on the Jimny leaking oil, so I replaced the gasket (which appears to be leaking again at the rear - another story) and in order to do so, you need to remove the black plastic cover which hides the ignition coils to get access.

After replacing the gasket and putting the coils back in, I took her for a quick test drive. She spluttered and mis-fired and so I removed the black plastic cover and noticed it would arc out (second coil pack) every so often (at idle). Anyway I decided to remove the coils and adjust the spark leads going into them, and upon doing so noticed some oil down cylinder #2 spark hole. I cleaned that oil out (assume it was leaking before I replaced it.

Long story short the misfire is a lot better, but it's still present. In particular it occurs when in second gear going up a hill from low rpm's and clears up. Tends to happen when applying more throttle than light throttle for some reason. I suspect coil packs are gone, but only had them replaced a year or 2 ago (no idea what brand - mechanic did it).

Before going and buying new ones I wanted to see if the OBD reading could confirm a problem in a particular area (since CEL light is on). I've read all sorts of threads which tend to be earlier Jimny's not a 2008 model with VVT head and M13A. For example this site seemed useful but didn't cover my model as far as I could tell.

Yesterday I ordered this from Kogan. "Mini Bluetooth ELM327 Car Diagnostic Scanner for Android" (not sure if it will work with Suzuki's or Jimny's?)
https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/mini-bluet ... c-scanner/

Tonight I found what appears to be the OBD2 port under the dashboard.
https://goo.gl/photos/Q4shBj5RkqpDYiBJ6

But I don't see any other ports to short or use the hair clip trick on to get the dashboard lights to flash.

This weekend I'll try sort out the valve cover gasket - may not have seated right on the rear of the head. But after driving it a while I don't see any oil going into the spark plug holes where the coils go. So I think I can rule that out, also the fact that the car was missing slightly before I pulled the cover off seems to indicate the problem existed before and I may have just disturbed a dodgy coil pack?

Any help re: OBD2 would be appreciated. I'm guessing ignition is caused by spark plug, coil pack or CAS but the fact I saw it arcing out seems to indicate a coil problem...

Thanks Shep, I'll update the thread if I manage to get it working. Just waiting for it to arrive.

On the topic of coil packs I found some generic ones on eBay.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-Ignition- ... 2548.l4275

$50 for a pair seems very very cheap.

Where as Genuine Denso's are $150 for the pair.

Has anyone had experience with both or have they experienced problems with the cheapies?

Here is a photo of the coil packs in my Jimny.
https://goo.gl/photos/v7WFGDVcEe8wak9Q7

You should be able to zoom, they have a date stamp on them 2014. Part no. 33400-65G00 which looks genuine Suzuki.

Can anyone confirm?

Ok so bit of an update.

The CEL light went out for some reason, even though the misfire is still there. Having started it a couple of times in the morning I've noticed it doesn't seem as bad when the car is cold. I wonder if the coil packs shit themselves when hot?

Still waiting on my OBD2 device to arrive though :(.

Another update.

1. ) Check engine light went out on it's own... Weird huh?
2.) I put the valve cover gasket on incorrectly it was leaking oil out the back of it.

Do you see the little nubs at the rear?
https://den1j6w8azajr.cloudfront.net/im ... c39096.jpg

1 of them wasn't seated properly because the valvetrain is very close to the gasket surface and I must have mis-seated it when installing first time around.

I've adjusted it now and I think the leak is gone. Going to get some degreaser and finish cleaning the bay to double-check. I ran out of the stuff and there was quite a bit of oil around the engine and gearbox to clean up..but so far so good.

3.) Here's the odd thing though....the misfire seems to be mostly gone...

it's still there like before (but only after turning a corner and in second gear at low rpm's) do I notice a small subtle miss..if you accelerate hard (like more than half throttle) it coughs for a second then is ok. Do you think there is some kind of weird vacuum issue going on?

The valve cover oil breather hose goes to the throttle body I assume to re-burn that oil vapour but do you think the ECU uses this signal in anyway? Hence the misfire issue when there was a vacuum leak in the valve cover?

It seems to have gone away when the valve cover was properly sealed? Only other thing I did was unplug the coil packs to remove them when changing out the gasket. Replug them in and bolt them down again.

When putting back the spark plug leads etc.. I noticed 1 was pinched slightly (not badly just a tiny bit of an impression) because you have to organise that spaghetti mess a certain way to make it all fit nicely in between the cam towers and under the plastic cover.

Not sure if the leads are particularly sensitive in that way? But it doesn't look like a lead that would need replacing. It's a bit like if you pinched a power cable for a laptop with your fingernails, that kind of impression, not a cut or sliced wire.

I might replace the spark plugs as a just in case.. The small miss at low RPM has confused me. (not sure when he plugs were changed last).

Another update.

Changed the plugs, changed oil and filter and went for a drive.

Car seems a lot better now, tried to get get it to miss in second gear but it wouldn't "miss" as far as I could tell. So not sure if I got the problem solved or not?

Still not sure what it was to be honest. It could have been the plugs or perhaps oil leakage into the spark plug area (caused by leaky old valve cover gasket) preventing the plug from being able to fire correctly?

It did appear that 2 of the plugs had Corona Stains.
https://goo.gl/photos/TsiWd7649mU3cQ5z9

See here:
http://www.ngkntk.co.uk/index.php/techn ... ono-stain/

I'll keep an eye on it and when the OBD tool arrives I'll check what codes it's thrown up.

Good thing about working on these is how simple they are!

Well Kogan's Bluetooth OBD2 reader doesn't work. The car is a 2008 Model and built late 2008 so it's Euro 4.
Reading through various forums it would appear that although the plug is OBD2 the protocol is different.

SDL/KWP

I'm not sure if there is a generic tool out there that works with newer Jimny's? Or if you need a specialist tool?

Thanks Fordem,
Yeah I think his site is on hold, perhaps onto new things now?

The Jimny still has a slight miss sometimes at idle (when stopped at traffic lights) and sometimes at low rpm (when accelerating below 1000rpm) which is usually when in second and applying torque.

I may give replacing the CAS (Crank Angle Sensor) a go, but for some reason I think it's the coils. Even though they are genuine parts and not that old..

I don't know why you think his site is on hold, I'm seeing him active as of yesterday's date.

Update coil pack was stuffed. Spark output was good but insulation failure leading to it arcing out. Replaced with new 1 and misfire gone. Sadly no warranty on coil. Even though genuine part. Mechanic sent me a video will try and share.
