hi fellas, nice to be here, just picked up a 98 sierra soft top its my first 4x4 so i wanna have some fun.
As far as i can tell its stock except for taller tires and mate says it has raised king springs in it. have been reading heaps on this site and around the net and its all very confusing?conflicting so im gunna take the cheats way out :D and ask you knowledgeable people to tell me about my car and its usual modifications.

so whats different about the coilys other than the obvious coil springs? tell me a story.

i want a winch bar and winch, will this fit off other model sierras? or 96-98 specific?

rock sliders on the cards aswell.

lockers? think i read somewhere that there is nothing available for the coily front diff is that correct? while im here assuming its standard, what diff ratios have i got and what splines axls F & R?

what suspension mods do u do to the coilys?

body lift is probably out because in qld ya need a swerve test for the mod plate at substantial cost, bummer.

the altenator doesnt work and doesnt even line up with the other pullys so it has been messed with before, so ill do the falcon 110 amp mod ive been reading in these pages.

live on the gold coast and car should be on the road before the xmas holidays so give us a pm if your gunna go out fwd'ing at the local spots (ormeau/reedy)over xmas. should be fun to watch me learning LOL.

Coil sierras have a large number of unique parts. It's easier to list the parts that are the same as a leaf sprung sierra:

Steering box
Rear differential centre and carrier (not diff gears)
Maybe some rear drum brake parts.

Even the engine is slightly different (although it's still a G13) and requires specific parts.

suspension mods are limited to about a 50mm spring and replacement shocks. These won't add measurable wheel travel, only lift. Travel might actually get worse with added lift. About the best mod you could do is leave it alone, maybe even add a light rear swaybar to make the front work harder - coilers have low rear roll stiffness and high front roll stiffness so they like to flop over an lift front wheels way up.

Correct, no locker for the front diff. Rear lockers are as per a leaf sierra.
Diff ratio is 3.9. (Same as narrow track 1.3 sierra) There are no alternative diff ratios for the front diff.
Yes, a leaf sierra front bar will fit but it doesn't line up as well with the body as it's a different shape.

Front splines are 22 and rear 26, same as a leaf sierra, but the CV's are smaller than 1.3 sierra and the axles are wider so there's no interchangeable heavy duty parts.

I didn't think a body lift was a hassle in QLD - mod plate was it?

Qld body lift does not require swerve test. It is just a mod plate.

thanks mate heaps of valuable info just what i was after. bummer that i bought 1 that doesnt modify easily but hey its my first and if i love 4x4'ind then i can upgrade later on.

with regard to the body lift i was refering to this qld 4x4 facebook thread where a roady guy was talking stuff, but it was about a patrol i think. have a quick look https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... 068&type=1

did u read it ? i only believed it caus the fella who does rwc's for a living confirmed it? he said if the body lift is done with or after suspension n tires ie: not "just body lift" then the swerve test and "not cheap " mod plate is required?? i dunno? unless as i said its only patrols or as u said facebook is full of BS?

as i said i new to fwd and its been a steep learning curve but ill keep reading. :)

while were here , will the coily rear brake cylinders be the same as all rears as mine are leaking so ill get some newys. cheers.

In qld with the new laws you are basically allowed 50mm (not 2 inches) of total lift, whether that lift comes from suspension or body lift makes no difference. Tyre (not tire) size can still only be increased by 15mm.

Not many coily owners have owned leafys and visa versa so you may have to check parts suppliers like repco to see if they share common wheel cylinders.

From memory when my wheel cylinder started leaking a leafy one did fit. It was a while ago and I've had much American Honey since then so best to check.

ACTUALLY, latest news apparently is no mod plate is required for bodylift alone.

News to me, must be a recent change :D

I've used DBautotech a few times and the dude knows his shit. Anyone else aware of these changes?

Actually, you can run the Vitara front diff gears in the rear and run the 5.12 gears from a JDM 660 coily (auto, I think) in the front.

I don't see the point when you can do all the reduction in the transfer case without having to source fairly rare second hand parts from overseas.

So if I change front anti roll bar with an aftermarket one and put one in the rear, change front suspension geometry to jeep like or new jimny separate coil from shock with new tower. Would that make things better???
