Howdy All. Just thought I'd post up some good news...well for me anyways. I heard that fuel economy would be better with a snorkel, better breathing and all, but I did not expect to see the results I am. I was expecting a little bit better but not that much. I have 07 Grand Vitara, with the V6 in manual. I normally get 12lt/100kms around town, no air con. Not exactly great in my book esp when i'm trying to plan a gibson dessert trip. So decided to get a snorkel on, mainly to get the air intake up higher away from sand and dust and was hoping for a little better fuel economy which is what people said to expect. Got the sarafi snorkel hooked up on friday. I'm now getting 10lt/100kms. Now that isnt just based on the taco and looking at distance vs fuel. I've got a OBDII sensor and reader and looked at the figures going through the engine. Without Outside temp 16 average air intake temp 30o Fuel Eco 12/100 With Outside temp 16 average air intake temp 22o Fuel Eco 10/100 I cant say there is any noticeable difference in engine performance, well a difference I'd be happy to say wasnt just me being excited about this. Now all of sudden, the distances between some of the town we were looking at are doable with a jerry can, not three. Anyways, just thought I;d share. Cheers Nelly |

That's a great result, Nelly. The snorkel will pay for itself in no time with those figures. |

Well after two months of having the snorkel on.........same results....its nuts. I've taken the average of the week, each week, and then averaged that across the last two months, and get 10.5lt/100kms. still no noticable performance increase, but i'm just happy with the numbers. Cheers Nelly |

Makes me wonder what I'd see - I guess I'll take a look at IAT readings see how high they are. |

I did have a good look at the temps when i first got it, but havent since. There was a noticeable drop whilst the car was in motion, but during traffic, it quickly rose back up above ambient, something like 30d on 32d day. The difference was when you start moving, the IAT now drops immediately. I doubt very much that this would effect the fuel economy greatly unless i was doing alot of stop start driving, which isnt the case. I even thought that it may be a little bit of an air-dam effect and forcing slightly more air in, again this wouldn't provide the difference i'm seeing. I'm pretty interested now to get a high flow muffler, something with glass packing not a straight through, and see if that then proves to give me any better economy. Just my way of thinking, but the only way I can see that sort of improvement from a snorkel would have to be the reduction in intake air temps - I have personal experience with the sort of power increases you can get on a cool damp day, so if we can reduce the intake temp and get more power, that would/should allow us to do the same work with less throttle. I have a fair bit of traffic during my daily drive, so if it'll make a difference ... |

Would be interesting to see the pressure differential across the airbox/air filter with and without the snorkel. While reducing the IAT it may also be increasing the volumetric efficiency slightly. |

interesting result, 15% increase in fuel economy with only an 8degree drop in temperature seems like alot. How much complicated pre air filter piping was replaced? You using the exact same fuel for both tests? And how many tests did you do with and without the snorkel? and how many kms were performed for each test? a full tank of fuel? and you changed nothing else between tests? no maintenance performed at all? same air filter? |

no idea about the amount of piping that was replaced sorry mate. I know that it used to gain air from in teh wheel arch but never pulled anything off to look. Same fuel. 91 unleaded about two months worth of daily driving in the city with a few longer trips 300km+ both without and with. records taken every week, using refueling and km's traveled and checking that against the average displayed on the dash. been just over two months after the snorkel with the same conditions as above. no other changes made, including tyre pressures (42), until a week ago when i got a good service done that did transfer case, diffs, iridium sparks, engine oil, and filters Same paper type air cleaner as standard which did not change during testing. |
