Post subject:  Heavy Duty Clutch
Hi all I currently have a 97 model SJ80 on 31" muddies with stock gearing.. (haven't found a leafy case yet haha) I'm just wondering will I need a stock clutch or a heavy duty one? I've heard story's of the Exedy HD pink clutches breaking clutch cables but has anyone on here used the Xtreme brand hd clutch? Also pink in color haha..

Or will I only need a standard clutch? Just wondering because of the stock gearing and the 31s..

Most people will suggest a standard clutch, as would I. A HD clutch will reduce drivability on and off road.

Keep looking for a leafy case (have you checked AZ classifieds?)

Exactly. A HD clutch isn't a solution for wonky gearing.

Don't knock it till you have tried it :wink: . Exedy HD has been wonderful offroad for me, especially in the slow, technical stuff. No complaints here.

A HD clutch has short peddle play (well did for me) meaning short shift, for me this makes it easier to control, takes some getting use to but when you master it, it has many advantages. I found it great on rocky hill starts as you can quickly get the car to hold with out rolling back then take of slowly with out to much clutch slipping. To modulate if need you can just blip (slightly push) the clutch, while a standard you have to modulate where your foot is.

Going from a HD clutch to standard you think when is it going to engage! Going from standard to HD alot stall as not use to how quickly it engages..

It really comes down to how you drive and how easy you want the car to drive.

All larger wheels would do i gather is effect when it engages eg larger wheels slightly more effort to start turning so more slipping before it enages.

An exeddy HD clutch though is like stage 0.5 on the gecko scale of hektik clutch stages.

How much heavier is the pedal feel, and what is the take up like? If you don't slip the clutch I don't see an issue with one. OP would be slipping the clutch with standard gears

I like the long take up of a standard clutch. I tend not to slip the clutch at all when driving off road. Maybe I don't drive hard enough terrain, but the 6.5s, small tires and rpm flexibility of a g13a running ok-ish give me plenty of choice in what speed to hit things.

I want the clutch pedal to be as light and gradual as possible. Combined with the hand brake there is no rolling backwards, the only reason I'm going backwards is because I'm in reverse or sliding back down the hill after being defeated (not a nice feeling).

HUH? :roll: THE exedy was actually harder than the one i have now :wink:


JR would be better to say what take up etc is like as mine is hydraulic. To me it wasnt really that much differnt except it engaged quite quickly, felt more in control. If like long take up with soft pedal i would stick with the standard it does the job and does it well. If you dont slip though you would like the HD apart from maybe slightly harder peddle and maybe shorter clutch travel.

There's more to clutch hektikness than clamping pressure. Button brings way more hektik than HD.

Pedal feel is on par with the stocker, take up is smooth and linear, its very predictable and very easy to control especially when you need to work the clutch (re: slip it) to procure extremely low wheel speed to maintain a tight line without wheel spin.

It all comes down to how you set it up
I have had Excedy HD in my last 4 zooks and love it
People that have driven the car couldn't belive it was a HD clutch

Just make sure you leave at least 5-10mm of 'wire' on the fork that is on the gearbox (the adjuster)
