I have an SJ70, I've had the rear diff rebuilt and new wheel bearings put on the rear diff. The diff had to be pulled back out after 2 days of driving and have another set of gears put on it as they were noisy as all hell. I noticed last night when re-assembling the rear end I have a twitch of play in both rear wheels. Slightly more on the longer passenger shaft. When the drums are all bolted up there is nothing to be felt, after the 30" rims/tyres are fitted up you can feel a twitch. AND a small knock which sounds to be heard from the pumpkin of the diff as you rock the wheel. my question is that being the nature of the rear setup is it normal to have play on these rear ends? or are my wheel bearings fucked already. another thing I am thinking is the thin layer of silicone between the backingplate and diff housing enough to allow the bearing to float and cause this issue. |

depends how much play but i would say you put cheap chinese bearing in it and they are rooted again already |

id say 2-3mm movement. They wern't Koyos, some other brand in a red box. Just what they listed against the car from veales, didnt get an option on brand. |

I got around 6000km out of cheap chinease rear wheel bearings, and that was just road driving with 1 or 2 short 4wd adventures on standard sized tyres. Koyo or nothing im afraid. also the "small knock" you are hearing, sure that isnt just the gears of the diff taking up when you turn the wheel? where is the 2-3mm measured? at the wheel? |

I got about 150ks haha. This is rocking it from top to bottom. Probably closer to 2mm, than 3mm. Just weird a sound can be heard as the axle tilts when its rocked. |

if the bearings have play, the axle will move around in the diff and the side gears can shift slightly. sounds like cheap bearings collapsed |
