Hey Bloke, I havent rigged one up a jimny yet, But I have done patrols, toyotas ect, ect. They are pretty easy, The hardest part is soldering the connection end on the the uhf lead for your arial. I normally get a shop to do that bit.

I prefer to have a separate switch that controls the Uhf so you can have the car off, keys out and still run the uhf (Army trick)..

I run a duel battery system so i can do that real easy dosnt matter if I forget to turn it off. If you put that switch next to your ignition its easy to remember. Other than that just run an in line 5 amp fuse and insulate everything, Arial cable and power leads. The more insulation you have on the Arial the better signal you get due to less electronic interference. I like to use the non split sock style condute then put the split ribbed stuff over it (also army trick). Give yourself a good day at least. I take a lot of time to run my gear and I only ever do it once. Buy the good stuff it pays in the end

Good luck, make sure you have a beer wile doing this stuff it reduces stress levels lol

and put the arial as high as you can/ as far away from the cab as you can. the lest amount of metal close means the best signal

Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree with your advice there B1GBOAR. The best possible location for your antenna is the centre of the roof. I wouldn't say that's "as far away from the cab" as possible.

As for wiring an accessory constant on, I'd suggest that's almost guaranteed to result in a dead battery. Even if it's only once, depending on where it happens that could be a pain, or dangerous.

I'd just pick up power from the cigarette lighter. Easy to find, accessory switched, and already fused. (The supply +ve to the radio will already have a fuse on it. Leave it in place, as it's appropriate for the current draw of the UHF, which is very low.)

I'm all for doing things the most time consuming and complicated way, but sometimes the quick and easy solution is the best.

Steve.

Yeh you are right Steve. I do have an abstract way of doing it, and I do do it that way because I got caught once when I was out shooting. The ECU failed on my Navara and wouldn't power my ignition switch so I couldn't turn my UHF on to call for help from the homestead. I was a fair way out from there, I had to hot wire my UHF in so I could call for help.

I look at the UHF as a safety device, thats why I wire it into my sub battery with a switch to the other as well so Im not relying on one battery. So my crank battery is just that, and my UHF can switch to it in case my sub goes flat. Other than that my sub runs everything else. Compressor, work lights ect. I set up solar panels as well when Im gonna be stationery for a wile so I can get a Good Week out of my 720 Marine pro 120AH. which is heaps.

Im still working on setting the back of my Jimny up, but this is how Im going to have it. once I get my bull bar, this part of it is going in.

and who puts an antenna on the roof? height it the best yes but if its not mounted on the cab itself, then the cab interferes with it. Im just sticking an extended height bracket on my bull bar, Once again When I get it, For ultimate signal, you can hook it into a lightweight but you have to be stationary for that.
