Post subject:  Raising Spare Wheel Carrier/Mount Vitara?

I know there would be pics for this buried somewhere in the rig threads, but frankly I have better things to do

Basically, I want to extend my spare wheel mount to carry a 31 or 32.
I was just wondering what would be the easiest method of going about this, so if you guys could attach pics of your mounts to give me inspiration, that would be great! I, preferably don't want to chop up/weld any of the original mount, as I wouldn't mind being able to take it off an put a stock wheel back on (don't want the stocky to be high as f**k if it doesn't need to be), but if this can't happen then I'll sort something out.

Cheers.

pretty sure that one is welded & non reversible

Post subject:  Re: Raising Spare Wheel Carrier/Mount Vitara?

Don't think you'll have much luck making it not reversible... you could bolt a strip of plate into the original holes and then have holes tapped on up higher to bolt it into but would need to be pretty chunky. you could also get a scrap one and butcher that and change to stock one when you need to

I redrilled holes higher. I put plates behind, inside door for extra bracing.
Slight trimming to clear the wiper arm.
Bugger to fit the bolts, but not a regular job.
I also put a small spacer on, and longer stud, to suit mags.

Here is my mod to clear the rear bumper.

Running 30" tyre.

Thanks for the input guys.

What Suzukiboy has is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Cheers for that.

i didnt take pics but i bolted 1" square tube where the original carrier is usually mounted to the tail gate the drilled holes in the shs 1" higher and bolted my carrier to that there is plenty of room for a taller/wider tyre i have a 30x10 and could easilly fit a 31-32x12 and its 100% removable

by bolting on the shs and mounting the tyre carrier 1" higher on it, it both lifts the tyre 1" but also moves it out giving more room for a wider tyre

[edit] took pics:

Oh, that doesn't look too bad. Might have to go for that option. Cheers.

can see in last picture i had to remove a little excess material for the wiper arm to clear however i think i knocked up the whole setup in about half hour i even welded nuts inside the tube to make life easier but maybe u could use heavy duty self tapers...?

self tappers, thats a bit flash... i'd just nail it on.

Oh yeah, that's not too bad. Yeah I don't mind welding, just as long as it means I am permanately changing something on the car, which in this case that is not.
Sounds good, thanks. :D

That one isn't finished yet, it still needs bracing and possibly cutting and re-welding to space it out further and the sharp angles ground down. The one below it also doesn't have the edges ground down or any bracing. Make sure to keep it as close to the original distance away from the car as possible to minimise leverage.

Yeah but mines better than yours :thefinger:
Doesn't need bracing, there's an overlap of the two halves on either side of the plate, that's bracing enough

I agree, this may be an issue with mine. Mine was lifted quite a bit and there's definitely more leverage created although the movement is more of a fore-aft movement so, I've added extra door stops to control the movement. There was talk in another thread about spare mounted gerrys, I don't think my tailgate would cope.

:thefinger: That ones not mine
I made a rear bar for mine so don't need one but for when the jerry and tyre carrier are off the back i just spaced the whole carrier out and used longer HT bolts no mods needed.
I had to space it out because the rear bar is just flat where as the stock has a depression for the tyre. Now i can have pretty much any sized spare on the rear
