This is a long shot I know, but I was out in the weekend giving the truck a good work out and I noticed a strange sound. It's like a tinking sound like a loose washer somewhere, but its not.

Seems to be from running gear or cv when 4x4 is engaged, doesn't do in in 2x4

Thought I'd post up incase you GV guys knew of a general problem which I don't know about.

Very hard to pinpoint when you have to be moving to get the noise to occur and no one was keen to be dragged under my moving truck, lol

Any ideas ?

yep

can you get a vid of the noise... gopro/sticky tape phone or camera to car?

what side?

is it wheel/road speed related?

front dive shaft speed related?

got FWH's so you can drop it in 4wd without the hubs locked in & lock the hubs in while in 2wd?

Seems to happen more when im taking off in lower gears.... Ive jumped under the truck and given most of the running gear a wiggle and can not see any movement or rattles....

no FWH, autos.

Used my iphone, so it picks up on wayyy to much and its hard to hear, but at the very beginning, you can hear the tink tink tink sound

could be a front uni joint... bit hard to tell in that vid & IMO being in 4wd & on tarmac isn't such a good idea especially turning corners, your CV's are going to have a bad time.

there is also a small roller bearing in the front hub that the outer CV shaft runs on & it usually gets ignored when doing wheel bearings etc.

CVs on that model are always turning, even in 2WD, so the only additional parts moving in 4WD are the ring & pinion and the front drive shaft (plus the t/case internals) - tinking noise as in tink-tink-tink - suggests driveshaft UJs to me.

Thanks for the replys guys, I put the truck up on stands and managed to work out that it was the pinion bearing, which you guys were all saying it was likley to be. Its also started leaking diff oil from the back seal.

Anyone over there do rebuild kits for front diff of 2002 GV ?

I was gonna ask if you had put a steel diff in yet, that answers that and that noise is more than a bearing  8O

I have purchased:

-Steel housing and third member with 5.125 ratio ring and pinion.
-2 spider carrier with the 26 spline side gears, NOT the vacuum operated free wheel carrier.
-RH CV and LH shaft from a 26 spline non vacuum front diff.

Sexy Sexy !!

ahhh cool, so that confirms that the manual GV 1.6 (SQ416) is 5.12:1 or did you swap that ratio in?

Nah thats the ratio they come with, 2nd gear low 4, 30's/9.5/r16, 5000 rpm is where the magic happens
