Thinking about welding my rear diff until I can get some money for another air locker... What are peoples thoughts on it regarding road handling? Only gets driven on weekends really and sometimes down to the shops or when it's raining.

Cheers

I reckon you'll break axles. Stock vitaras can break axles pretty easily with welded rears and GV's are no stronger.

Handling should be no big problem. You'll notice it but quickly get used to it. The sky won't fall and no kittens will have to die.

Hmm, what causes them to break axles easier than a rear autolocked vit/gv?

Cool, I have a spare center if I want to swap back anyway.

Bind is a guarantee. Auto locker can release under the right circumstances. Welded diff will break an axle under the right circumstances.

I would do it though.

Go for it, easy to change back if you hate it.
Wise to have a set of spare axles anyway.
But a spool be better, if they exist for yours.

Anyone know how much GV axles are each?

Same rear center as the vit so I guess so. How much are minispoools or a lockright? And where can you buy them?

i don't believe that the GV rear is the same as a Vitara rear, sure they do swap over but if they were exactly the same people wouldn't have to swap to a vitara 3rd when fitting an air locker.

Ohh, do you need a vit 3rd?! that's gay, I was gonna put it in my GV 3rd. Got a vit 3rd in atm anyway.

Air locker totally replaces the center so welding the vit one would be easier than changing the R&P over to the GV one.

Another question, how would it go towing the bikes around? Just take it easier I guess.

Only driven a Sierra towing with a welded rear, and lockrite front.
It was fine.
But my Vits only ever had a lock rite rear, so no experience on that.

i had a welded rear in my sierra for about a year before i took it off the road for mods... it was very predictable and easy to drive in slippery conditions - you just had to either slow right down, or start counter steering 1/4 of the way through any corner =) it was great fun! lol

i never broke or damaged axles, and i certainly thrashed the shit out of it - but i was running close to stock sized tyres too.

Your turning circle will suffer as it'll understeer like a bitch. On the dirt you won't notice it till you want it but on tarmac it'll suck.

Hehe i prefer full opposite lock ;)

Yeah dunno how it'll go with 32s on em... hopefully joeblow will have his floater kit out soon for the Gvs.

Well got the rear welded diff off Bigrig the other day and it's been good. A few things that are shit about it is parking lots... Or slow speed tight cornering.. And will probably wear my muddies down nice and quickly.

But the stuff you can do offroad with it is amazing! Can drive a lot of tracks in just 2wd. Few tracks put the front air locker on as well and just crawled up. Few people asked me if I had reduction gears hahahaha..

The only difference between the GV and Vit rear is the carrier. Internals can be interchanged.

As for lockers anything that can be fitted to the Vit rear can be fitted to the GV but in some cases you will need to use the Vit centre as some GV centre are a different design.

Is that in regard to a lockright or similar?

So I'll be able to put the rear VITARA air locker into the GV Carrier?

If its a 12 bolt rear then most likely Yes.

But in saying this if you already have an airlocker or a lockright in a Vitara Rear 3rd then why swap it? The Vit centre will bolt directly into the Gv rear housing. Axle spline count is the same.

The diffs in the Suzukis are interesting when you start playing with them. So many components are interchangeable with other models.

Example.... In the rear I was running a X90 carrier, 4.8 Gv crown wheel and pinion with a sierra 1510 Lockright inside a GV housing... ( Locker was remover due to tyre wear issues)

Up front its a GV steel diff with Vitara centre and 1510 Lockright.

:| pretty sure fitting an airlocker with 5.12's into a GV rear carrier gives you this viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8320&hilit=vitara+ARB+R%26P

in the end he ends up with a Vitara rear carrier as seen here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4723&start=60

Don't have an air locker for the rear yet B4T but i'd like to put it in the GV 3rd cause the vit 3rd licks arse and gets a shit load of mud stuck on top
