| Post subject: | Dyneema rope swap on ridge ryder winch (super cheap) |
Hey guys I bought the supercheap winch 9500lb's today, as they were half price $349. I want to swap out the cable with dyneema rope to save on weight. The steel rope is 28meters. I was wondering if anyone swapped it out and if they were able to put more length in there. I was thinking bout going 40meters, but unsure if it will fit. Any help appreciated. Cheers |

I previously ran 50mtrs on a lowmount, it was dynamica brand 8mm i think... 31zook might chime in here Currently i have cheepo 10mm on my m6000 and the 28mtrs fills it.. I'd much rather the dynamica rope i previously had... but im a cheap skate...... i knew i shouldnt have sold it |

And now I have it! It's only 30mtr and it only just fits on my 8000lb warn lowmount. |

Steel cable is generally 6mm, whereas Dyneema is usually 8-10mm. So while it does compress a little, it takes up marginally more room than the equivalent steel length. I'd get 30m to store on the winch, then either an extension strap or another length of Dyneema with eyes at each end. |

I think ill stick with a 28 meter and then just get an extension like one of the boys mentioned.

Another qn. Can you replace the cable with the winch still fitted to the car, or is it a 'bar off/winch out' job. I've seen a vid where the guy did it while it was on, but couldn't see close enough to the detail involved in removing the cable. Wanna fit the winch this weekend, but dont have the plasma rope yet.... Cheers if anyone knows. |

Depends if you can get your hands in with the bar etc installed. Is it just a simple winch lug that anchors the rope on the drum? If so it's pretty simple if you can physically get in there. |

Mine is tied to the drum wrapped up a heap of times then marked so I don't spool out past it. |

I second the tie off method, i have mine bolted on the looped around and tied, marked when there is one full set of wraps covering the whole drum.. Its recomended to have a full drum on with rope as aposed to 3 or 4 wraps( half drum) for wire... Dyneema is slippery stuff! |

I pulled the bolt out of my winch rope on the first long winch that I did so mine is also tied onto the drum and then duct taped down tightly for about 4 or 5 rotations of the drum. Also to help the rope slipping on the drum we put down a few layers of tape back to back straight on the drum before the rope. After you use it with the tape on there it gets warm and sticky and holds the rope tight. |

no trouble replacing the cable with the winch on.the end of the steel cable has this to connect to a screw on the drum. ![]() i had 2 of these ridge rider 9500lb winches. both had the same gearbox issue. supercheap planed on putting the gearbox from the 12000lb winch onto the 9500. if your winch lever doesn't turn 360 degrees clockwise to the starting point, and instead turns 180 to engage then anticlockwise to disengage you have the older model and i would highly recommend taking it back. also, the 12000lb comes standard with a synthetic rope. its 10Kg lighter according to qantas... |

Yeah ur right. The first one I bought came with the old style clutch which is chrome and the lever is also closer to the drum. It also doesn't come witha wireless controller. I returned it as I had an issue with the clutch not engaging. When I replaced it I got the newer one where the clutch lever spins all the way around and is also at the point furthest from the drum. Its a much nicer design and engages very well. It actually clicks and locks into place. Good heads up. |
