Legally....450kg's.

If you are asking what it CAN tow, irrespective of safety or legality; I've towed in excess of 1500kgs over a short distance. But I had upgraded brakes, and rear suspension, so it handled the weight quite well. Still, dangerous and illegal on the road.

Even towing a few hundred kgs, can be a little scary in a sierra.
At 400-450kg Id be wanting the trailer to have brakes.

Due to the short wheel base, I find the nose dives under braking and under hard braking it is enough to lock the rear drums up.
When towing a trailer, as the nose dives, and the rear raises a little, then the trailer pushes into the car, making it lift higher.
And I would hate to do a step-steer test whilst towing, let alone experience a random high speed swerve.

Use a box trailer, and put 150 kg in it. Then practice some emergency stops and see how comfortable things feel.
Then increase to max legal limit. Consider how scary an emergency lane change, or swerve event would be.
And remember we all take it easier when towing, but it doesnt change the fact that other road users are fucking stupid.

I just wanna know if it will tow a quite light 7x4 with 2 dirt bikes 40l of peto and water couple swags and some spares for riding etc the rest will go in back of car. Just don't wanna strain the little beast too much, not worth it, will figure out another way to get the bikes there.

It might tow it IF it has standard tyres and will use a crapload of fuel, proberbly more then 18ltr per 100km.

If larger then standard tyres with stock gearing then no it won't tow what you want.

I used to tow often with my 1l sierra, but I only used to haul around a few mountain bikes and camping gear not dirt bikes.

New Plan: Gears.

So a dual cab ute can tow upto 3t with a brakes trailer, but a zook that is setup to tow can't two around 1200kgs with a braked trailer?

The old rule of the two car must be heavier then what it's towing went out the window years ago

Does that 1200kg include trailer and buggy weight ?

Was it complianced to tow 1200kg's? No...it wasn't.

A SWB sierra chassis, suspension and brakes are not designed for that sort of weight. A 950kg SWB sierra should not be towing 1200kgs of anything, though I doubt that a trailer AND buggy weighs so little.

I remember seeing pics of a sierra setup as a 5th wheeler, it was running dual wheels on the rear diff.
Its probably the only sierra I would think of towing a sierra with.

At my old work, we tested 4x4s and matched trailers fully loaded in dynamic handling conditions.
A lot of $ and engineering went into those trailers, and it was still scary.
A lot of the testing done was to get current bench mark standards for specifications for new trailers to be matched to their tow rigs.

A buggy and trailer behind a swb sierra is begging for darwin's theory to smite you

Try doing some emergency man oeuvres, and then reconsider your position in darwin's queue.

all cars have their legal tow capacity, but AFAIK certain states follow this rule as well as the tow capacity, whichever the lower figure is...

and christover, that video is always the first thing i think about when posts come up about sierra towing! its great!

What engine?

If it's a 1.3 or even 1.6 I don't believe you.

I think it is 750KG braked, same as most other cars unbraked, unbraked was a lot smaller, I think even smaller than 350kg.

I've towed a few things with mine, including a 4.2 meter tinny and it does fine if you use common sense Ie: drive slower and allow braking distance.

I haven't towed any thing as big as that buggy though.

My Vitara is only 450kg unbraked, and only 680kg braked

Post subject:  Re: Towing with sierra

I had a few heavy loads behind my Sierra including a similar sized tinny. I did a trip to Fraser with somewhere in the range of 400kg behind it and four people on board, like you say... common sense required.

Anybody tow a couple of jet skis behind a Sierra?
