what they said, but preferably without the cracked blocks that seems to be plaguing the G16b's.

Happens to G16a as well - I have owned 3 cracked G16a engines as well as the G16b in my Vit!

The G16a in my white coily was cracked at the front and the rear of the block!

I know I should use the search function but its pain on the butt on this mobile. Can someone give quick answer as to why they keep cracking?

so it's official G16 suck the big one... jam a J20a or a H25a in there & be done with it.

Funny thing is every G16 I've owned thus far has had at least 1 very small crack on the drivers side of the block!

There aren't too many cracked G13 engines around to my knowledge...

Youve been lucky!

Ive never had a cracked one, But have only ever had baleno. Ive cooked one and she still went like a cat on fire with oil bubbling and black smoke. Only thing that stopped me was the crank sensor melted casing, arcing out onto the sump. Block didnt crack.
I then changed the whole engine..

So it's safe to say the g16's are a cracking motor!

Boom tsssh

They crack because they were made with alloy that isn't the greatest quality, with years of expansion and contraction even the best alloys will crack.

How many km are Bal engines good for? 200-300k like Vits?

They should be no different.

I figure in a Bal they're much less stressed than in a Vit.

Post subject:  Re: best engine for sierra

I know the block castings are different

Different mounts as vit for ps pump
Different front casting section for crank sensor

Has anyone slipped a J20A into a sierra??
I have seen many conversion kits for 1.6 but not for a 2.0

Yeah its been done plenty of times.

Conversion kit.... http://www.trailtough.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=18&category_id=66&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53

Tanshi got his running with the J20, before tearing it down.

I'm half way through the same conversion.

IMO its more work, but if you are happy to address the strength issues with the rest of the drive line the J20 is a stella choice for a sierra ( atleast on paper ). Worth mentioning that the fit quite well into the engine bay.

yep.

Other suspect parts would be the transfer case ( long term) and deifnately uni-joints. Upgrading to hilux based drive shafts would be a good idea.

There is no reason why you couldn't just drop the motor in and address these other things as they become an issue, but just be aware that a J20 FAR exceeds the power and tourque handling abilities of most of the sierra drive train.

And a brake upgrade is a must!
