Post subject:  Audio options for Suzuki Jimny (2008)

So brought a Jimny the other day, stoked with it, great fun car to drive etc. only one problem.
The audio is terrible, like really average...

Anyway i removed the original 10w sanyo 4" speakers in the front and replaced them with a couple of 30w xenith speakers.
Sounds better but no real volume and at a higher volume it still distorts

So i plan on installing rear speakers as well, but would it be worth it without installing an amp? as the original head unit (which i want to keep) only has 13w RMS per channel
And if i should install an amp any recommendations on amp specs to get, and where to put it? and if its worth going to the trouble?
Cheers,
Cam

For about $400 you can have a decent sound system.
Pioneer head unit. $100-$150
Decent 4" 3 way speakers for front. $80-$120
Pioneer 6x9 rear speakers. $125
Ebay 10" underseat (built in amp) subwoofer. $125

amps are virtually pointless unless u have sub get good head unit, 4 inch splits and under seat sub is my opinion, will do great and who knows u could put the rears in down the track

I've got 4" in the front and 6" in the rear, with the 6's running off an amp, and a 7" GPS/DVD/tv combo from china. Without the amp it sounded average... With the amp... Fully sick bra ;)

Edit: the speakers are of a pretty high quality, can't remember the brand though :(

from my research ive seen that a 5inch? will fit in the back just behind the seats. there looks to be a factory hole and grill. I also read somewhere that they come with wiring at these points from factory just no speaker is this right? Im planning on new decent quality 4inch speakers at the front some decent quality speakers for the rear and then a decent head unit. looking to spend $600-$700 all up so i think i will be pretty happy with the results once this is done. not really interested in a sub or amp just good quality base components(head units & speakers)

I think it's a 4 1/2 inch hole or something similarly weird. But I'm sure you could make 5" fit.

cheers guys,
Replacing the head unit seems like the easiest option, only problem is fitting it, has anyone fitted one without cutting into their dashboard? would like to keen it clean as possible

A good quality amp improves sound quality and volume 3 fold.

Make sure you use as short RCA leads as possible and the best speaker wire you can afford.

Split or component speakers are 50x better then standard combination speakers.

Get a head unit that has sub out put or pre amp out so if u do get a sub you can lower the bass out put on ur speakers to reduce distortion with out sacrificing sub levels

Audio is one of those things where you get what you pay for.
Like want 33s said 400 will get a good package but I would recommend 6 inch splits all round.

http://www.suzuki.co.jp/car/jimny_x_adv ... index.html

if i did decided to change my head unit id try get one of them, to make it a clean look, but aparetnly a new fascia cost around 200$ so wont be replacing my head unit anytime soon

Post subject:  Re: Audio options for Suzuki Jimny (2008)

My stereo is compact and sounds great, and you can't see it so doesn't use up any visible space. SO would recommend to anyone, and still fairly cheap.

A good amp will replace the shortcomings of any head unit, which usually have crap internal amps, so spend your money on a decent amp for the speakers and you can save money on the headunit and just get an entry level unit.

I recommend Sony entry level double din headunits. They got loads of features, loads of RCA jacks on the back (Double dins usually do) and has SONY's "DSO" digital enhancement feature which tightens up the BASS and TREBLE really really well, so you can get away with an entry level SUB and it'll make it sound tight and punchy.

Spend all your money on a good amp. You can only fit 4 inch speakers in the front stock speaker mounts and you can squeeze 5inch into the rear stock speaker mounts actually although it's designed for 4inch. Get some Jaycar Kevlar soft dome speakers. They can are far better then branded speakers, and kevlar cone/soft dome tweater combo has always sounded great. They just need a lot of power to sound good, so get a great amp -

Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4 is tiny and will make the four jaycar speakers really sing at high volume. That's will sort out you mid and treble crystal clear.

Then you can get a second budget entry level 2 channel amp and sub combo to fill in the base. If you want to use up space in the trunk then put whatever you can afford, if you don't want to use up room, then JB-HIFI sell a tiny entry level sub that can slide under Jimny passenger seat, and you can fit a entry level compact JVC/SONY/Pinoneer amp next to the rockford fosgate 4 channel under the passenger seat.

Sounds good in my Jimny, although it's a struggle tracking down all the rattles and vibrations in the jimny's interior trim, but thats just a jimny problem you got to overcome with any stereo.

I'm not sure if the OEM stereo has outputs for rear speakers or RCA for an amp. Meaning, you'd need a different head unit. Can anyone confirm this?

A Jimny is a small car. Personally, I think an amp would be a be it of overkill and a decent head and speakers is plenty. I'd also suggest forgetting a disc player and just go all MP3 on USB, ipod or bluetooth to Android interface.

If you're handy with plastic or timber fabrication, I can't see it being too difficult to make a surround to suit any size stereo you install.

There's no RCA outputs in the standard deck.

Running an amp is important IMO if you want clarity. Sure a decent unit will give you enough volume but the quality won't be anything in comparison to an amp.

Post subject:  Re: Audio options for Suzuki Jimny (2008)

Get a JVC, Eclipse or Alpine head unit. Don't touch Sony, Fusion, Kenwood etc, the internals are rubbish. High end Pioneer are ok, but the low end stuff is average.

For a factory look, get a couple 4" Response components (Jaycar) up the front. Don't worry about splits unless you want to play with tweeter locations.
Then if you can find somewhere in the rear to stick a couple 6.5"components that would improve your midrange significantly.

A sub would be good but depends on how much space you are prepared to lose.

Response amps are good value for money but allow about $150 for cables, fuses, battery terminals etc. They improve sound quality significantly over a head unit but just depends on your budget and what you can fit.

Post subject:  Re: Audio options for Suzuki Jimny (2008)

mine has 4inch alpines (where the ones with more RMS and peak power of 4nch) at the front and I got some 5 1/2" VIve at the back (they are pretty sleek).. I just need it to re drill some new holes for it

and yep, the wiring for the rear speakers is there on the car.. it sits on the left side (pesenger side) just over the wheel arch check out my bulit tread, it would show a pic of where it its viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22857&hilit=blue+balls+jimny&start=60

and like other ppl said, an amp it doesnt only give u more level, but also more cleaner sound

just be sure to buy a head unit that comes with the 4 outputs if u want to have the 4 speakers and an amp latter on... dnt go for the first cheap one as u wont be able to fit it later

my next move is to but an under seat sub, I dnt want any DOOF DOOF.. jsut want to enhance the lower end to make the system response a bit more flatter (all freq sounding equally)... plus help take away the lower end of the small speakers so they can work better

I was thinking originally on the Jaycar model, as it is pretty cheap, small enough, and comes with a preamp instaled all in one little nice package (dnt have to buy separate amps), so one RCA cable from my unit and presto

but the other day I went to autobarn and I saw this new baby Image

so it got me thinking... I check some reviews online and its is waaaay better than the jaycar one. THis guy bought the two of them and made a comparison review http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/i ... -a-review/

so im basically for the moment keeping the stock head unit as i dont have to money to do a proper job, and as for a sub i wont bother with one either, will take up too much room and got a feeling the bass would make the whole jimny rattle haha so passing on a sub for now,

Prty much im going to put in a couple of 6x9 speakers and want to put them in the back arm rest spaces, only problem is finding a box that will fit nicely (joeblow did you make those middle boxes yourself, or have them made?)

6 inch and upwards can deliver enough bass for general listening. so 6x9's will be allright if you just want a cheapo set up. You'll need another head unit though, the stock Jimny unit is going to give you some severe distortion. And to be fair, even with a VERY good head unit, you are always going to get a lot of distortion at high volumes as the manufacturer expects serious listeners to be providing amps. A cheap headunit/midium amp are going to provide a clearer sound then just an expensive head unit alone, and for roughly the same cost.

if you want good sound buy some decent speakers first..

dont buy Sony, Fusion, Kenwood, JVC, Eclipse or Alpine etc pretty much any speakers you see at supercrap or ricerbarn dont buy them they are crap.

buy something decent like Morel, Vibe, Polk, DLS, Rockford(for the cheaper end) Rainbow. etc

I can vouch for Morel and Vibe! :)

But Alpine make some sensible priced and quality priced speakers on a budget.

/mini thread hi-jack

Pioneer TS-D1602R or Rockford Fosgate P165 Punch? Both are 2 way 6.5" coaxial. Pioneers are being heavily discounted at the moment, so despite their RRP being considerably more there won't be much of a price difference between them landed.

Will be run off a decent Pioneer head unit (ie. no amp). Reckon it will have enough grunt to do the Pioneers justice or should I stick with the rockfords which are more of a drop-in replacement.

Post subject:  Re: Audio options for Suzuki Jimny (2008)

Personally, I wouldn't go with Either, I'd go find a Kevlar Cone Speaker. But out of those two, the Pioneer seems have a higher spec, but at the same time it seems a bit experimental with the cone materials - but it might be good. The Rockford fosgate on the other hand, while I really rate the brand, it's the entry level budget model with a cheap poly cone which is basically one step above your paper cone, and nothing special in any way. I'd be suprised if it sounded better then the Pioneers, so without listening first I'd go Pioneer.

Regarding the Amp, - it's rare any headunit can do your speakers justice, but you may as well give it a go without and add the amp later if you want. That being said, I don't rate cheap amps. They have their place, but really a mid-budget amp, like a $500 4 channel is where stuff starts to sound nice. If you haven't got that kind of cash I wouldn't bother buying a cheap $200 Sony/pinoneer/alpine amp, I'd just save up and run them off the head unit in the mean time. You only got to buy 1 good amp ever. Head units go out of date and you'll get through stacks of them, but the amp just keeps going so worth investing in a good one.

yeah fair enough, defs dont have the cash to get a solid amp, so just going to run of head unit at the moment, just been trying to find couple of speaker boxes for the back, but cant find any so seems like ill have to make myself, and dont have the time at the moment :/
So looks like im stuck with the two 4" at the front for the moment :/

Im running a pioneer avh-2450bt head unit, 4" fusion fronts, 5.5" vibe splits in the rear, a option audio 'oak 75' amp and 1200 watt option audio sub. Sounds awesome after i fine tuned it.

Rear speaker holes are to suit 4" speaker btw.

You can fit a 5 inch in the rear, you just use self-tapping screws, or drill four new holes. 5 inches fit easy.

Both are pretty similar in specs.
The Pioneer is the better one though. Much better lower end response and a better cone design. Neither will be crash hot on a headunit though as they are only 88dB so will sound a lot better with an amplifier. A head unit will struggle to drive them at high volumes. You need a sensitivity of <90dB for it to sound ok/good off a head unit.

I would even consider the Jaycar Response 6.5" Coaxial (CS2402). Kevlar cone and silk dome tweeter. Very good value for money and a bit more efficient (89dB).

If you really don't want to run an amp then these are the go... Crescendo Opus 1 @ $249. These run well off a head unit but are splits not coaxial and come with no fancy grills etc. The money is all spend on the design and materials, it's up to you to do the mounting/prettifying.
Review: http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/pro ... ts_review/

The Morel Tempo 6 is 90db but a bit more expensive and splits again.

Hope that helps.

Sorry squiby my 5.5's were a bit too big so I gathered they were 4" holes. Could also be the design of my speakers too.

Thanks mate. That was actually my plan originally (even went there to buy them) - problem is the stock cutout is only 125mm and the Jaycars need something like 145, so substantially bigger. Want to keep them in the stock locations behind the doortrims etc, so not interested in custom mounting.

Rears I could possibly make work as its just cutting into sheet metal around it, but the fronts will need some creativity. They sit on a plastic spacer about 40mm deep, so maybe I can just get a larger diameter spacer. Will have to investigate a bit more how big I can go without it hitting the doortrim.
