Hi folks

I got Valvoline dura gear for the diffs, Trans and transfer car. Is this a quality oil? I got the GL4 be apparently that is what is required?

Car is shifting well since I got rid of that Kodiak gear oil.

I hope you aren't going to use the same oil in the diffs and gearbox/transfer.

Yep, as Want33's said.... no good for the diffs. You need a GL5 rated oil for diffs

How do you mean?

Yes I am using the GL4 Valvoline Dura Gear 75W-90 in the Transfer/Trans and front and rear diffs!

So the GL4 Dura Gear 75w-90 is good for Transfer and Transmission but I should use GL5 for the diffs? Whats the difference?

Thats what the manual said at the shop to use GL4 in the diffs, trans and transfer

The old stuff was Kodiak gear oil according to the owner.

It is a 1991 Vitara JLX manual

i use this as a guide: http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/

punch your car details into that & it will tell you how much & what type is required.

Castrol according to the website recommends a CASTROL VMX-M 75W-85 GL4 75W-85 .

I went down stairs to check the oil bottle and I am using Valvoline Duragear GL4 75W-85. Isnt this the same thing just different brand.?

i just checked the castrol website & i think it's been updated recently, i am 100% positive it used to list 2 different grades of oil for the diffs & gearbox... i can't remember what i used, can check in the morning but it was definitely 2 different grade of castrol

Ok so what i have figured out is the dura gear is good for the transfer and trans but not good for the diffs.

IT seems a GL5 is recommended for the Diffs.

Thats an easy change out considering ive already changed the bloody oil twice already.

All good mate cheers

IT seems the Transfer and Trans are good on the GL4 75-85 Dura gear. I guess same as Castrol just different product name.

The diffs recommend a synthetic 75-90 where GL4 for GL5 are recommended.

I might buy 4 litres of the Syntrax and replace it over the weekend in the front and rear diffs.

No he's figured it out for himself, and worked out GL-5 is required for the diffs.

Seems he didn't bother to read post No3 above!!
