| Post subject: | Spaceship under my dash..and it likes my clutch! |
Hey fellas This morning and throughout the day my 96' swb Vitara has developed a whiring/whizzing/fizzing interference-ish sound.. The sound mainly occurs when the clutch is pressed in but can also happen when stationary and in neautral. It sounds like it is coming from behind the drivers side dash, but sounds are so tricky to pick sometimes.. so may not originate from there..Im really not sure what could be causing this? Car drives fine. Hope you guys can help.. Ps. installed 2" body lift the other day, that could of put something out?? Thanks, Mark. |

my guess is clutch thrust bearing and/or input shaft spindle bearing in the flywheel |

Was thinking the same thing but had a listen near the bell housing area and sounds all good...a bit odd how it's sounding almost static like. Hm..new clutch soon I guess! |

Geeze, thanks Atari, bloody champion you are. Lol. So what would it be in terms of bearings? If it was the throw out bearing I'd assume it would only squeal when the clutch is released? But because it does it when I push the clutch in, it'd have to be something else aswell right? |

ms1991 wrote: If it was the throw out bearing I'd assume it would only squeal when the clutch is released? NO..... Throwout bearing only spins when clutch is depressed. If you have noise with clutch out it is most likely the spigot bearing or gearbox input shaft bearing. |

Humour me, when it does it, just lightly lift the indicator stalk up a bit to take the pressure off |

Lol.. I had to indicate anyway. $725 for a new clutch, fitted.. Pretty much on par you reckon? I suppose it has gone through some shit, 110000 kms isn't too bad for the original clutch hey? |

Vitaras are notorious for wear in teh stalk, drops a bit and doesn't quite fully switch the indicator, but its enough to make the flasher unit which is at the drivers side of the dash buzz like crazy and scare the crap out of people Not many gearbox bearings are in teh drivers side of the dash so its a strange place for them to make noise, a noisy spigot and throwout that dont make completely different noises is also unusual |

Bit of grave digging, but are there any tips on how to “rejuvenate” a stalk that doesn’t self-cancel all of the time other than buying a whole new unit? I got as far as picking up one out of a Vit wreck that was a couple of years older and they are quite different, so that’s a no goer. |

I pulled mine down and flipped the worn metal contact around so the stalk contact ran on an used part of the metal contact. The contact was so worn it had a hole in it. |

Cheers Matty, Where is the contact you are talking about - behind the stalk? I have a chucked up a pic showing my set up (95) and the one out of the older model (92).

Oh they're very different! Mine was the bottom one, The contact was behind the stork. It was a few years ago that I did it, but I deff pulled the indicator section apart to get to it. Sorry I cant be of more help. It makes a lot of sense once it pulled apart and you can see whats going on. |

Bought some contact grease, put it back together, test run around the block, self-cancelled on every turn - fingers crossed. Hope every fix is just a bit of grease |

Well done guys. My SWB 95/96 has been doing this for a while, but I couldn't actually work out how to describe the sound to get some advice. Mine is a weird whirring sound when you turn the steering wheel a bit further than normal, but it does sound very electrical behind the dash. Kev.

My right indicating was doing it ever since I bought it. I spaced something inside with a cable tie. no problems till just recently. |

I've got an assembly out of a 93 Vitara that's been problem free if anyone needs it. |
