I've got a few serp pulleys which I think are off a 1.6 of some description. I offered them up to my project engine to make sure they all line up and sure enough they don't. The water pump pully sits about 3mm too far forward (hard to see in the pic)

These are the possibilities that I have come up with so far:

I'm using a 1.3 bottom pulley (the one that has the timing belt on it) redrilled to take the 1.6 crank pulley. If the 1.3 and 1.6 bottom pulley is a different thickness then that might be where the problem is.

The water pump on the 1.6 and 1.3 have different length snouts.

The water pump pulley I am using is not the right one for the bottom pulley I am using.

You cannot space them out a tad?

The other pulleys may be simple. If its only 1-2mm. With washers etc.

Then the crankpulley depends how its put on, Because the main bolt may come loose if a washer was put behind the pulley...Unless you Locktight. :?

But if was me, i would maybe try modify the water pump pulley only if i had to..

Have you looked at other motors?

(mine are all original multiv 1.6 Baleno pulleys for my baleno motor...)

I dont want to space out the crank pulley because of the extra leverage that would cause. I think it would be a stronger setup to try to mod the water pump pulley. I might compare the dia to a std water pump pulley. dont want to modify the thing then find it spinning the water pump too fast/slow.

is the waterpump and pulley rwd or fwd?

I believe there are different waterpump pulleys for both as well as them being different pcd :)

and the correct automotive term is multirib, serpentine refers to a long belt that snakes its way around all the pulleys :wink:

RWD, that engine was in my Sierra at one stage, the water pump I replaced when I first fitted the engine. So as far as I know it's a RWD one, if Repco stuffed up ( :roll: ) it could be a FWD one.

Well once i'm finished the belt will be snaking around a couple of extra pulleys, but yes thanks Royce it is a multirib belt.

FWD has a bigger pcd than RWD and the pulleys wont fit at all, I then believe within the RWD ones there are pulleys that are different 'heights' may be a 16v and 8v thing

the post I remember on ol was by mud4b, should be able to find it from that :)

I do have another pulley which has a bigger PCD, so i'm guessing that's off a FWD. It's quite possible the ones I have are off a 8v. Thanks Royce.

What about machining the inside o the watter pump pulley? Not enough meat? Why going serpentine? Are you putting the charger on the 1.3 now?

Yeah not enough meat, they're just pressed steel, about 1.6mm. I need to space this thing back in aboug 3mm.

Yeah, im not happy with the amount of BS I have to go through to drop compression on the g16. With the g13 i can just change pistons with off the shelf parts. Easy and cheap.

I was hoping you wouldn't see this, coz now you're going to give me shit about stuffing around in the shed with other projects instead of getting my POS trail ready :? :lol:

Nah its alright. I won't give you crap until mines back to trail ready hehe. All I really need though is the back bump stops extensions (I think). Though at the same time I really should take care of some oil leaks.

Nah then the leaks would increase exponentially. I once drove past a rover and the engine started to seize instantly. I'd hate to see what would happen if I pulled up beside one at a red light! 8O

Some honda guys are using vitarda 1.6 pistons as low compression ones. They are real deep dish and you can drop the compression just by using them I put a link up somewhere for them. I see if i can find it.

Yep the Vitara pistons are an option. There are actually 2 different types, in one the depth of the dish is about 6mm (they are the ones in the pic), and others are about 4mm.

For my engine I think they Vit pistons are going to drop the compression too far, because I think that the 16v head I want to use has bigger combustion chambers than the GTi head. On the GTi the Vitara pistions drop the compression down to 7:1 - 7.5:1 depending on which ones you get. I will know more for sure once I get around to cc'ing the head I have.
