Hey guys, I've got a mates Sierra G13BA 91 w/t, and when running there is a bad smell of petrol coming through the radiator (cap's off) doesn't matter if it's cold or hot it's still smell's the same. Done several head checks, compression checks and the head seems fine. Have a feeling it could be leaking fuel into the inlet manifold either from carb or possibly fuel pump and then the smell is coming out through the radiator? Has anyone ever come across this before? Fuel pumps can leak out the back when faulty, tho I unsure if it can get into water jacket. Inlet manifolds can crack, or leak thru gaskets, yet again unsure if that could be it. A pressure test of cooling system should sort out if there is a leak. Could be dangerous, hot fuel under pressure, so get it fixed before driving. |

cheers mate, yeah have done a pressure test on it and its dropping very slowly but there is no physical leak and after we have watched it drop and put more pressure on it and done that 2-3 times then we thought it may have been internal (leaking into the cylinder) but then cranked it over with plugs out and no water resude of any kinda was present. its a harder one to pin it down to. |

A compression test don't always show up all problems, could still be head gasket or a crack somewhere. Hope not. There are band aid solutions for small cracks or leaks, (oul and or coolant additives) but a proper fix is obviously better. |

Water jacket does run through the inlet manifold, and through the carby warmer/choke system. Could be worth checking. Is it more an exhaust smell, or a raw fuel smell. I been searching the net seems to be a lot of similar issues out there. |

yeah he is also having carbi problems as well so it wouldnt suprise me if there is something not going right in there... its more fuelly, ive put the tee-kay head check sniffer over it and it didnt pick up a thing. then stood a good 5 metres away from exhuast at the rear to double check it was working and it changed colour like it should with very little exhaust gases passing into the sniffer. its a arm twister, just running every senario to see what it is coming down to. cheers for your help as well |
