Post subject:  Air bag trigger mods...........

Has anyone modified the air bag trigger for off road, Was thinking of putting in a cut out switch for low range only. There has been the odd occasion that I have had to nudge a tree or 2 out of the road on the way home & would hate to get punched in the face by the air bags for my trouble.... Thoughts? Ideas?

I would think this to be highly illegal and dangerous if you forget to reactivate and then have a crash.

I'm not sure on Suzuki systems but they usually won't activate under a certain speed and also need the G-sensor to trigger

Was thinking like using the wiring to set it up so it will only work in low range......like a trigger switch so there is no capacity to forget.

any modification to the wiring is illegal, but yeah factory airbags arent meant to deploy under certain speeds, and if you are going the speed to nudge trees out the way im sure you would be under that threshold, about the most realistic thing i can think of to do, if you have your mind set on it would be to pull the airbag fuse when you offroad

The air bag is only going to go off it it needs to
doesnt matter if ur doing 10km or 100km. if the force is enough to set it off u want it to go off

The last thing you want is the airbag going off at 10kmh!!

I work for Holden, and going off there systems, 30-40km/h is the minimum for trigger. It doesn't just rely on a sensor at the front to sense impact, it's a combination of wheel speed sensors, yaw rate sensor, and also impact sensors in the front.

I'd assume in low range duties the speed wouldn't affect it too much, as if you ran into a tree above 40km/h you'd probably appreciate it going off. Remember they spend bazzillions of dollars building these cars, and understand people use the 4wd as a 4wd. If you bypass the circuit and crunch the front far enough to break or upset the signal to the impact sensor, I probably wouldn't want to be in the car when you turn it back on.

Just wheel it as you normally would, join a 4wd club with public liability insurance, make sure your own insurance company covers Offroad use (some do, I'm with one that does) and enjoy life :)

My 2c, I ain't jebus but I know a bit about boats....

I think the new triton has a over ride key in the glove box.... Also i think the air go off at any speed because when you see those crash test videos the car that there testing is standing still while the trolley hits it

I was always thought that it was the rate at which the sensor/s where set off if they were set off at all that determined if the bags whent off or not, cause if your at a standstill at the lights and some bloke cleans your up from the front you would want air bags wouldnt you? Just my opinion. As said above if the car systems decied that the air bags need to go off, you will want them.

I dropped into gunshot creek wit a fair amount of force and my airbags didnt go off.
that was pretty much close to a headon at slow speed.
