That depends on quite a few things.

What sort of car is it? How many kms on the engine? Is it using oil? Do you know its service history?

I usually use a diesel oil every 3 services, as it contains alot more detergents in it for removing carbon build up. The downside to this is that it can remove carbon buildup from around your motors seals, allowing oil to leak past them if not in good condition.

But generally speaking, you just use what is recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Should be in the owners manual.

its a 92 sierra. the engine has 192kms on it and it is using a bit of oil but not much at all, and it blows a bit of smoke, i have no idea off the service history.

i was going to go with a thicker oil for older engines and was going to put stop smoke in the oil also to try and stop the amount of smoke that it pushes out.

Yep. Sounds like a good candidate for a slightly thicker oil. 20w-50 should be fine. If thats no good, try a 60 weight at your next service.

Manual says API GL-5 SAE 75 or 80W-90 gear oil, a few people worth listening to on here (like the bloke above) recommend an LSD oil whether you're locked or not.
