4wding yesterday, coming back home along a dirt road, my car randomly stalled and wouldnt turn back on. The ignition coil/dash cluster fuse had blown, but when I replaced the fuse it was behaving as though the timing was way out... i've tried redoing the crank/cam timing suspecting it had skipped a tooth... But I was going quite slow when it did happen, so now im thinking it must be something to do with the blown fuse. When I replaced it I used a 10a fuse instead of the 15a it says to use in case there was a short but its still intact... And I dont even know where to start looking, anyone able to give me an idea of what it could be?? Edit: should mention its a maruti, with a G13A engine. |

yeah getting fuel, seems to be getting spark, thats what made me think timing in the first place. just didnt think it was coincidence that it blew a fuse just as it stopped working... |

slipped a tooth, how hard were you giving it to it? spose you need to pop the cover off and have a looksy when it gets home. how does the oil look? any water involved in the days activities? |

| Post subject: | Re: engine died and wont turn back on |
i was driving quite hard during the day, enough for it to slip a tooth... however, after we were done i pulled up for about 20 minutes to air up & have a quick feed, and drove off. 10 or 15 mins later i stopped to play with some settings on the uhf, realised id stalled when i stopped and it wouldnt start again. only water involved was half a foot deep at most, and not flowing at all. it was all sand driving for the day. the engine did get quite warm at one point while doing a sand dune, but i drove for a good 2 or 3 hours after that with no problems whatsoever... i did take the cover off on the side of the road to try and redo the timing, but ive never done it before so i cant be 100% but i followed exactly what i read on here to do. even spun the crank round and tried again in case i had it 180 out, no improvement... i'll have a proper go at it when i get it home |

Have a look on your coil. On the side closest to the fire wall there is a little black and brown plug that just sits on the hand barb on the coil. Has that come loose? It's not clipped on, it just pushes against it. Happened to me the other day. Worth a look. |

ok: stupid question time. ive just pulled the rocker cover off to see the valves... exhaust valve is the one on the exhaust side and intake valve is on intake side? if thats the case, then the exhaust valve has just finished closing when the cylinder fires... which is always awesome. |

yep. just put the leads on backwards (swapped 1 & 4, then 2&3) and she runs beautifully... very strange that it skipped exactly 180 degrees. |

VERY strange..... There MUST be something you have forgotten to tell us. Dissy's don't just jump 180 by themselves. |

want33s wrote: VERY strange..... There MUST be something you have forgotten to tell us. Dissy's don't just jump 180 by themselves. Martians maybe. It is 100% totally impossible that the dizzy just happened to go from running sweet, to being 180° out. |

haha. got it running, idled fine... put everything else back together, gave it a few revs then it died... no spark this time. there must be a short somewhere, im assuming its what blew the fuse in the first place can anyone tell me what sort of readings i should get from the wires attached to the coil at all? as in, +12, -12? |

| Post subject: | Re: engine died and wont turn back on |
to each of the wires i mean, theres yellow and white attached to + side of coil, and a brown and a brown with a white trace to the - i also wasnt implying anything earlier with the comment about it being 180 degrees out, i could have easily stuffed something up myself while doing it... joel told me when i bought it the engine was in need of a rebuild, as well as telling me EVERYTHING else that needed to be done. im yet to find something needing repair or replacement that he hasnt already mentioned to me. |

just following up on this, i discovered the problem... wire that ran to the carby solenoid was damaged and exposed and this was touching the side of the carby. it was only a small portion so only touched while i was driving it. this makes me feel very stupid to have been tricked by such a simple thing haha. |
