Well I've just scored a 1.6 (with gearbox) for my sierra. I have read that the vit box is good and should be used but looking at it, I cant see it fitting a shorty. Anyone actually fitted one?

ok I think I am answering my own question. I did some measuring now I have both engines and vehicle here. But for those who would also like to know

1.6 eng 470mm gb 580 tx 320 total 1370
1.3 eng 450mm gb 500 tx 490 total 1440

And as you know the gb and tx are mated together on the 1.6 and seperate on the 1.3.

The biggest issue is the gearshift on the 1.6 is back sitting ontop the transfer so you would nearly have to be in the back seat(if you have them) to change gears.

Disclaimer: my measuring stick may be out a little so adjust as you need to satisfy yourself

Im going to start my conversion on the weekend but I have allready widened the tunnel so ishould have any dramas all ive been told is take the transfer case off the vitara box and get a welch plug to fit the bottom hole and get a seal for the outpu shaft (part number not sure of) and the sierra jack shaft should go straight in

Not really correct. If it is a manual than no you don't need a plug for the lower shaft....it has one and secondly there is already an output seal on the shaft.

It needs a welch plug.

So it might be possible, looks like a lot of tunnel bashing to be had though and what do you do about the gearshift being so far back

I'm still curious....a welch plug for which part? As you can see on this manual the countershaft is plugged and there is a seal on the output.

Manual.

Perhaps the J20 gearbox/ transfer housing is different?

Ah. Now I see. You took the front housing of the transfer off.

I left it on, with the intention of fitting a second seal.

IMO it looks better than 2' of shaft hanging out the back of the gearbox.

I've just left the back of the box open. Fit a vitara output seal into the seal housing, plug up the other holes, and call it done.

I've used a shortened WT jackshaft. Fits straight onto the spline, and runs in the vit seal nicely.

Unfortunately I cannot tell you if your shaft will need shortening though, as I have a J20, moved back till it touches the firewall, so my gearbox is in a different location than yours will be.

Thanks, So the transfer case stays where it is, thats good. Got any more pics of the mounts and shaft.
