Post subject:  sierra with lockright. front one wheel locks but still turns

hi guys. got a problem with my sierra front diff. has a lockright in it. was 4bn on the weekend then on the last hill noticed the front left wasnt spinning like it should.

so i got home and jacked it up. the locker seemed to function correctly where you could turn the wheels opposite directions and it would ratchet and if you turned them both the same way it would lock. problem is that if you can keep turning the left wheel once its locked by turning it hard. at first i thought it wasnt spinning the centre of the diff when i did it yesterday but today i think it might be turning the inside of the diff, i dunno

so today i pulled off the hub? (first set of 10mm bolts) then noticed that the next set were finger tight to loosen (the 12mm ones)

any ideas whats goin on? hope the locker isnt broken

Kinda sounds like a CV has failed.

Yeah. Locked front and standard axles/CV's are baaaad. (in my experience :D)
I turned a locked front into a no drive front in one day.

yeah just hope its not my precious locker lol

i have taken the outer bits off ie. the hub and the next part under that. now i have the big 50mm or whatever nut with some sort of locking ring sorta thing it looks like. how do i remove this stuff?

before i take the big nut off do i have to remove the clip thing? tried hitting it with screwdriver and hammer to turn it but doesnt seem to go to easily

thats your wheel bearings. undo it with a 50mm hub socket or hammer and chisel/screwdriver depends on whether you're okay with doing it by feel or with a torque wrench.

The locking ring is behind the first nut.

how do i pull the axle and cv out?

You have to pull the outer locking hub off,
Take the hub/disc off(where the 50mm nuts are)
Take off the spindle and caliper mount.

There you'll see the cv stub. Pull on it and you will have the axle and cv.

Then check the cv for cracks if it's still in one piece.

If your CV is busted your going to have to remove the king pin's to getthe VV out. 8 kingpin bolts, 12 knuckle felt bolts and the cir-clip behind the 4wd-2wd selector. Replacing a CV is a 30min job ;)

Depends how it broke. I kept cracking the inner race so the cv comes right out.

does it sound like a broken cv yous rekn. il explain it again.

- i jacked the front up and put it in 4wd
- if i spin both front wheels at same time the diff locks as per normal operation
- i can still have one wheel locked and turn one the opposite way and hear the diff ratcheting (unlocked as per normal operation)
- now if i do the turning oth front wheels together thing again so the diff is locked if i grab the right wheel hard and try turn it it doesnt move at all
- if i try turn the left wheel it spins but there is fair bit of resistance. cant remember if the diff ratchets when turning the left wheel with diff locked. first time i did it i didnt think it did but when i did it next day im not so sure if it did or didnt. cant remember

it locks under load, its not like a positive locking device that is either on or out its just some ratchet teethy type thingys that grab on your side gears in your diff.

Maybe the springs on the left hand side in the lock rite are worn and need replacing. But if it still spins both wheels under load who gives a fuck, just drive it.

i now believe it is the diff not locking correctly. looks like i gotta pull more stuff apart.
