Post subject:  car wont start after degreasing and rinsing the engine bay?

G'day AZ

would like some help on getting my little truck going again after playing in the mud on sunday arvo.

drove around for a few hours in mostly knee deep mudd with it getting a little bit deeper in other parts (just incase this is relevant)
any way drove it home and it was quite sluggish and sounded like a victa lawn mower but it got me home in the end ( I know this is deffinately my exhaust has it has lots of big whole in it and has needed replacing since I bought the car)

so I got it home and washed all the mud off and hosed out the engine bay with the engine on and it seemed to run fine so I left it like that.

then today I thought I probably should give the engine bay a proper clean because it was still very muddy. so I sprayed degreaser lightly over everything and left it to sit for a few minutes then rinsed it off with the hos making it like a sprinkler to make sure no water got to where it shouldnt have.

so left the car to dry off for a few hours but when I came to start it I could here it cranking over off the starter motor but it just will not fire!

so I left it last night and tried again today but still no joy :(

the engine will crank over but it doesnt sound like any of the cylinders are firing

this leads me to believe I may have water/moisture in my plugs or around my distributer?

I am pretty new to the whole 4x4 thing and I am only 16 so can't really afford for a garage to fix my car everytime a little thing goes wrong

any tips or advice? I am sure this is something many of you have experienced befor

and incase it helps my car is a 95 feroza 2 with fuel injection

Does it have a distributor with leads coming off it and going to the spark plugs? If it does you want to take the plastic cap(with the leads coming out the top) off the distributor and dry it out. It should have 3 screws holding down. If you have access to compressed air then use that, if not then a wipe with a rag and try leaving it in the sun. If you want to remove the leads then make sure you mark them as they have to go back on right

Might pay to have a check of the air filter too. Also, pull the leads off the spark plugs and check there is no water down the holes.

cheers, yeh it has leeds comming from this distributer to the spark plugs.
the only compressed air I could you would be from my tyre compressor?

other wise the only other one I could use is at a mates workshop but there is no way of getting the car there :(

would the compressed air in a tin from dick smith work?

WD-40 on the ends of all the leads wins every time for me.

Don't worry about the compressed air, just makes life easier. If there is moisture in there, a wipe out with a rag and then just let it dry will suffice. Is the computer under the bonnet or inside the car?

I am pretty sure it is inside the car as there is no obvious place for it in the engine bay.

Good. Last thing you want is a drowned computer, that's not much fun

Do any cars come with them in the engine bay!?
That would be a stupid, stupid, idiotic, recall-worthy place.

90's model Holden Rodeo V6 has the computer bolted to the top of the motor
Others have them in the engine bay too

ok cheers for the advice I will check the distributer with dad when he gets home.

the air filter was the first thing I checked when I got out of the mud and it was a little bit dirt but nothing major, wasnt much dirtier than befor I drove thru the mud

Stupid people...
I thought my old pajeros one just next to the passengers ankle was stupid.
I love the placement of the sierra emissions control box.

dont muddle ur spark plug leads up when taking em of. make sure they go back onto the right cylinder

pull one of ur spark plugs out. plug it into the lead and then hold it so the tip of the plug is touching the engine. (dont hold the plug itself hold the rubber lead)

try to start the car. and look to see if there is a spark at the same time. ull need to people. you will know if there is spark. they are rather noticable.

if there is no spark you have found half your problem.
hope it helps

The lead will spark with the plug not attached.

also i hate touching the leads, they sometimes bite!

ok so checked the distibuter and leeds everything is bone dry
the battery had gone a bit flat so hooked it up to dads car and tuned the ignition and the engine is cranking over buut nothing is happening.

starting to think I may have shit it my fuel line? maybe in the filter? because the engine isnt getting flooded and we cant smell any fuel

Do you have tools to pull out a spark plug? It doesn't sound like fuel starvation to me.

x2 on checking spark
just get your mate to hold it while you turn the key

yer the engine is sparking we checked it last night I think the problem is there is no fuel getting into the cylinders

we tried starting the engine off a bigger battery and the engine will crank over but there is no combustion in the cylenders witch is what lead me to think it was a spark problem but the plugs will start

I think theres a fuel issue because even when we are cranking the engine over we cant smell any fuel or the engine isnt getting flooded?

It's injected so it shouldn't flood. Did you pull the plugs out? If so, could you smell fuel on them? If you find where the fuel line connects to the fuel rail, just crack it off with a spanner then crank it. If you get no fuel squirting out then you may have a dead fuel pump. Have you checked all the fuses?

Its the same motor as the applause, so the fuel line is attached at the very end of the fuel rail. Easy to access.

Injected engines can & do flood.

Most Suzukis ECUs, if cranked with a wide open throttle, shut down the injectors, allowing a flooded engine to be cranked to get rid of the excess fuel. and on the older EFI systems with distributors, Suzuki used an "ignition feedback circuit" that, if it fails to detect an ignition event during cranking, will disable injection to prevent flooding, and if the feedback circuit fails, the symptoms are exactly as described here - healthy spark but no fuel.

Unfortunately - I have no idea if Daihatsu does anything along those lines.
